Lyon hasn't really done anything too wrong...an honest toiler/plodder.
That's the problem. He's nothing more than a plodder.

For an off spinner, Lyon is doing fine. Not many Australians have in all the years of test cricket. The most successful has been Hugh Trumble with 141 wickets in 32 tests at a great average of 21.8

Then;

Ashley Mallett with 132 wickets in 38 tests @29.8
Bruce Yardley with 126 wickets in 33 tests @31.6
Nathan Lyon with 112 wickets in 33 tests @33.0
Ian Johnson with 109 wickets in 45 tests @29.2
George Giffen with 103 wickets in 31 tests @31.1
Tim May with 75 wickets in 24 tests @34.7

While Lyon's average is a bit inflated, he is amongst the best off spinners the country has produced.

Interesting. That seems to go more to my usual position that off spin isn't very useful unless you chuck it.

Carters in his innings became the second highest scorer in a debut year for NSW after Tubby. Obviously taught him well down here.

WA were f***** when they couldn't get NSW out on the first day, then to end up at 4/15…will take an absolute miracle…
NSW only have to bowl them out, then bat like Crowley & Boycott for 2 more days and Bob's your uncle, game over...

WA lose wickets on the first two balls of their innings. Love to know the last time that ever happened in a first class match.
