I believe he played Full Back in the Replay. And stayed there until the end of his career.

Reynolds didn't shift him from full forward during the game because he thought it would upset the team balance on the day. Or something like that.

First half of the first part is right. He didn't want to move him because it would hurt him emotionally.

You go Ben.

Who am I?

 I was a dour defender for Essendon in the 80's and 90's

 I played over 100 games for the club

 I won a club's best first year player award, most improved award and best clubman award over my career

 I was a quickish defender with great marking skills, but terrible kicking skills

 I played on the oppositions most dangerous forwards - mostly with good success, but did cop some mother hidings along the way

The answer is incorrect.

But that's a very good guess because most would immediately think of Kevin Wlash with those descriptions. Walsh finished his career in 1991. He never won those awards at the club though.

I will say this about Walshy. Looking back on games from his era, I must apologise to him. I was one of many critics of Sir Kevin. But everytime I see footage of games, he has performed extremely well. Looks totally f****** awkward in whatever he does, but he was effective. You don't become a dual premiership player, Victorian State Rep and an All Australian for being totally crap.

So I will state here today - Kevin Walsh, I am a fan!!

Which Essendon premiership captain missed a back-to-back flag (and in fact the entire following season) because he was away touring England with the Australian cricket team.

Good question Sneaky.

I immediately thought of George Stucky and William Carkeek. It's neither. It happens to be David Smith.

And this is the dossier from "Those Magnificent Men"
David B.M. Smith [No. 13]
142 Games 112 Goals
(1903-1911, 1913)

He was a champion centre half forward and utility player and a great Essendon captain. An extremely fast 13 stone, 6 footer, he was a superb mark and talented ball handler. He had a rare distinction of playing in every position on teh field from full back to rover. He was a pioneer in the art of ruck roving as we now know it.

He captained the 1911 premiership team from full forward but stepped down in 1912 when he was selected to tour England with the Australian Cricket Team.

This also cost him a place in the premiership side of that year.

He was also Essendon's first "coach" as we understand the meaning of the word in 1908 and 1909 and club vice captain in 1906, 1907 and again in 1909.

"Soaker" played 71 consecutive games between 1908 and 1911 and this was only broken through his cricket commitments. He also became the first Essendon player to reach the 100 goal mark in late 1911.

He was Essendon's leading goal kicker in 1908 with 26 goals and was runner up in 1903 and 1905.

He kicked 6 goals in a game in 1911 and 5 goals in a game in 1908.

He was selected in the League team that played Ballarat in 1904 and was a member of the Victorian Carnaval team in 1911.

He initially came from Sherwood's, a Richmond junior team and after leaving the Dons he did play 1 game for Richmond in 1914 before retiring.

In 1910, he had the honour of being chosen be "The Argus" to be photographed kicking so that the photos could be sent to overseas schools and universities.

He died in 1963.
Pretty impressive stuff!

Hints: It was about 50 years ago and his father and brother could play a bit.
