Tom Boyd
Tom Boyd
I can understand the Bulldogs selling the farm to get the bloke, but I do not understand the contract they've signed him to.
Yes the bloke is young, and very promising but a 7 year deal at over $1 million per year is ridiculous for such an untired player. Odds would suggest that even if he becomes a very good player, he will not be another Wayne Carey or Lance Franklin. There is also the possibility he could turn out to be another Liam Jones or Jarred Grant, simply not up to this level.
The bloke had already stated that he would be coming back to Melbourne at the end of 2015. Sure the Bulldogs needed him to nominate them as they club he wanted to go to. But was a 7 year deal, worth over $7 million dollars really required to do get him to do that, particularly for a still unproven player.
Surely a 4 year deal, worth $600-700K/per season which is still significant overs based on his current level of performance and based purely on potential more than anything, would have been enough to get him to come.
Who else was in a position to offer a player of Ryan Griffen's calibre and an early first round draft pick to GWS to convince them to trade Boyd a year early?

Re: Tom Boyd
yup.
And I thought we paid overs on Hurleys last contract given how much he had so far proved.
Doggies just take the cake.
Although Boyd does look really really promising.

It's a gutsy move. If it comes off they are geniuses. If not they will become football folklore like taking Tambling ahead of Franklin.
The kid has put massive pressure on himself. With the wage becomes expectations and if he takes 3 seasons to fire it'll be a long 3 seasons for him.
It'll be seen as a fail unless he becomes another Johno Brown, Wayne Carey.

Re: Tom Boyd
Remember when us and the Hawks got badly burned giving Mercuri and Holland big money 5 year contracts.
That's nothing compared to some of the contracts going around these days!!

Re: Tom Boyd
The Bulldogs won't be able to justify the contract unless he becomes a star and contributes to some success.

Probably take him a while to think of a connection to Perth or WA for this one.

That bit wouldn't be hard to figure out - an AFL/WCE/Freo conspiracy.Crazyman wrote:Or how Perth Demons got screwed because of the deal…robrulz5 wrote:bomberdonnie wrote:Why start now?grassy1 wrote: Hmmmm, let me think here,......
