Agony & Ecstasy

Post by BenDoolan » Mon Sep 26, 2016 7:45 pm

Grand Finals always have some good stories, hard luck stories and even some karma stories. Consider...

Ryan Griffen who walked out on the Bulldogs only to have them run through him on the way to their first Grand Final in 55 years. Add Callan Ward to that equation too.

Tom Boyd who was traded as part of the Griffen departure. Now looks at his former club with a smirk on his face.

Bob Murphy, who has played 17 seasons with the Bulldogs, will miss the most important game in a player's career. Who knows if there'll be another opportunity for him.

Stewart Crameri might have to re-assess his compensation claim seeing he may miss out on the ultimate prize as a player because of the supplement saga. Even though the dolt organised his wedding the day before the GF.

Tory Dickson ignored by our club while playing for our VFL side, ends up playing in an AFL Grand Final this week. All the while we're searching for more forwards. Go figure.

Will there be some stiff players missing selection this week?

Long time ago now, but from memory he faded badly toward the end of the year?
Edit: according to Wikipedia (so who the f*** knows) kickett had 15 disposals total for the 3 finals before the GF.

In 1990, Kickett moved to the Essendon Football Club, where he played four seasons, and became a popular cult figure, known for confident playing style, high leap, evasive skills and his long kicking ability. He was a renowned exponent of the torpedo punt. He played every match in 1992 and 1993 up to the preliminary final, before being omitted from the Bombers' winning 1993 AFL Grand Final team by coach Kevin Sheedy. The omission continues to be one of the most controversial decisions of Sheedy's coaching career, but Sheedy still defends the decision, stating that Kickett's form was poor (he had a total of 15 disposals in the three finals) and that his lack of endurance would have been a specific weakness for the team against Carlton, Essendon's opponent on the day. Kickett immediately walked out on the club, and did not watch the Grand Final, nor celebrate the victory with his team-mates.[6]

Facts are;

He played around 55 consecutive games before being dropped for that Grand Final.
He kicked 8 goals in an absolute freak show in R20 that season.
He had kicked almost 40 goals for the season up until that point.
He was being played off the bench in every final and in short bursts for some reason (love to know his actual TOG).
Dean Wallis gets selected while not playing a single final prior to GF, and only playing 8 games that year.

f***,my post froze.

Ben,Wally.

Hadn't played since the Kardinya Park Loss, but his effect on the Blues was Brutal!

He totally had them spooked!

He was but one part of the Jigsaw, but to devastating effect.

Derek, valuable part of the team, but even allowing for being benched, couldn't take a Trick.

Sheeds in my book was Vindicated in Selecting the 20 for the '93 Grand Final. But his handling of Derek and explaining to him,as why he was dropped could have been better.

I don't accept that. You can only look at that point of view after the game was played. Think of it in Grand Final week. What justification was there to pick Wallis? What form did he have? What had he achieved in his career to that point, let alone that season?

He was just a Sheedy love child and that's it. It was a bullshit decision.

But that's ok. We won the flag against the Scum. One of the greatest and most satisfying days in my life 8)

Ok,look at it in Grand Final week.

How does Derek's Form stack up?

Not great,eh?

Of course over here,it wasn't Wally having the finger pointed at him as the lucky one.It was Timmy!

Well before Jobe's career started mind you.

If you look at form, side by side, with Kickett and Wallis...

Kickett had 38 goals on the board for the season. Kicked 8 goals in R20 because he was on the ground the entire match. Played on Gary Ablett Sr the following week because Fletch got injured before half time. Then sat on the bench for the majority of the finals.

Watson did well enough to earn his spot in the GF. Had kicked 6 goals in the finals leading into the GF (26 in the season). Played a rank GF, but again, hindsight says he was "lucky".

Wallis had no form. At all. He was the lucky one.

David Flood, in my opinion, was the unlucky one (along with Kickett), who was dropped from the Prelim victory.

As genius as Sheeds was as coach, he made some crazy decisions. This was one of them. But it didn't cost anything. As we know (in hindsight), it paid off.

Probably something to do with Brendan McCartney

Pluease explane :?:
Derek hadn't had a kick in the previous 3 finals and hadn't had a kick since he kicked 8 v the Dogs. He had also put on some weight in that 5 or so weeks.

From memory I have heard people say that he didn't join the huddle at 3/4 time of the prelim and that was the clincher.

I feel more sorry for David Flood who was one of our best players in the prelim and got dropped for the grand final.

Derek was very lucky not to be dropped for the 1996 grand final for Sydney. His finals series was a shocker that year.

He probably gained weight because he was sitting on his ass on the bench for extended periods

In Sheedy's on words he said Kickett was a bit unlucky. He wasn't happy with his form "at training".

f***, you'd think the guy would have been dropped at some stage during his 55 consecutive game streak if that was the case...
