Will history repeat itself?

Post by karmabomber »

We are 10 years on from the 1996 National Draft! That year we had seven serlections - 2, 5, 21, 25, 28, 54 & 66!! I know wasn't 6 of the top 50 selections but it was 5 of the top 30 selections and look how we went!

2 - Chris Heffernan
5 - Daniel McAllister
21 - Tim Williams
25 - Andrew Bomford
28 - Jason Johnson
54 - Matthew Watson
66 - Paul Hills (re-selected)

Three of the above have finished up as premiership players (Paul Hills probably more by good fortune around finals time but still a useful wingman). Of these slections JJ has been the most valuable and he was our 4th selection! Let's hope that this year our top 3 selections are all 150+ games players for us and form part of our next premiership team!

Hills was a premiership player in 1993 and never played after being redrafted in 1996

I hope our efforts this year are a hell of a lot better than 1996 because (imo) a 28% (JJ and Heff) success rate sucks.

All of our top 20 picks need to work out as do at least one of the rest for it to be a successful draft.

I remember Bomford started off well when he started getting games but it didn't last long.

take out the whole hindsight thing, we probably didnt do too bad. was not the deepest of drafts.
Nathan Brown, Russ Robertson and Notting were probably better long run picks than Mcallister and Bomford. And ive been a fan of Byron pickett for a long while.
oh well. amends this year

So, looking at that list, I would suggest that J.Johnson (B&F, premiership) was the best product of that draft, and therefore the recruiting done that year was first class.

True enough, but the other valuable pick ups were;

Chris Heffernan - premiership 2000 (ESS)
Martin Pike - premiership 1999 (NM)
Cameron Mooney - premiership 1999 (NM)
Byron Pickett - Premiership 1999 (you'd have to say NM did very well from this draft!)
Tim Notting - premiership 2002, 2003 (BRIS)
Adam Kinglsley - premiership 2004 (PA), B&F 1998
Chad Rintoul - premiership 1997 (ADEL)

Not to mention that Martin Pike also played in another 3 with the lions. Not bad for a pisshead!!!

Also played in the losing NM Grand Final in 98 and won Fitzroy's B & F in their last ever season in AFL. An amazing career for a noted "bad boy".
