Interesting article about potential No.1 draft pick

HUGH McCluggage has emerged as the favourite to join Essendon as this year’s No. 1 draft pick — unless the Bombers trade the coveted selection.

The goalkicking midfielder who moves like Trent Cotchin capped a brilliant underage season by claiming the TAC Cup’s best-and-fairest on Sunday night.

McCluggage grew up on a 650-cow dairy farm in South Warrnambool and polled 16 votes from just 10 home-and-away games to join Dyson Heppell, Clayton Oliver, Matthew Kreuzer and Lenny Hayes as Morrish Medallists.
Recruiters believe McCluggage has separated himself from a pack of No. 1 contenders including Will Brodie, Sam Petrevski-Seton, Ben Ainsworth and Andy McGrath.

And the Bombers remain hopeful of adding an out-of-contract star with the first selection in the pre-season draft, possibly Gold Coast’s Jaeger O’Meara.

The Herald Sun reported last week that Essendon and Hawthorn are the early frontrunners for O’Meara, who is yet to nominate a preferred destination.

The Hawks are likely to claim Sydney onballer Tom Mitchell in trade period, which would aid Essendon’s hopes of O’Meara, 22, slipping to them for nothing.

McCluggage’s goalkicking nous — he has booted 25 goals from 11 games at North Ballarat Rebels — would add a point of difference to Essendon’s growing list of premium midfield talent.

He would join Heppell, Zach Merrett and Darcy Parish in a youthful engine room, should the Bombers select him at No.1.

This year’s draft is expected to be one of the most even on record.

But McCluggage’s hot form has him poised to become the Rebels’ first No. 1 pick.

While McCluggage’s style is similar to Cotchin, his numbers have earned comparisons to Port Adelaide gamebreaker Robbie Gray.

Champion Data rates the 185cm ball magnet the No. 1 TAC Cup midfielder for goals and score involvements, No. 2 for disposals and No. 5 for SuperCoach points.

Rebels talent manager Phil Partington said his junior star was so consistent it would be “unfair” to identify his best performance.

“He’s certainly going to get selected early in the draft,” Partington said.

“Whether it’s No. 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 we’re unsure at the moment.

“He’s been working on his real gut running and repeat running. He’s the link player.

“He’s consistently kicked two or three goals as an inside-outside midfielder for the whole year.

“He knows when to run and where to run and at times he’s that step ahead from his opponent.

“He’s very smart in close and having that time and space to make the game look slow on occasions is a really good trait to have at the next level.
“Whether it’s a Cotchin or a (Scott) Pendlebury (comparison), he’s certainly got traits of those.”

Partington said McCluggage was well equipped to handle the No. 1 tag.

“He doesn’t see the external pressure,” he said.

“The exterior is very calm and collected and we call him the observer. He observes everything and absorbs everything and carries on as per normal.”

He said the Bombers should “take the Luggage and go”.

The Dons remain open to trading the No. 1 pick for the right offer. No club has parted with the prized pick since Fremantle offloaded rights to Luke Hodge in 2001.

It looks as though he has broken clear since the championships to be the clear number 1 pick.

I'm saying that having never seen him play and wouldn't know him if he walked into my office now.

I love the name though.

I know nothing about this kid other than his name sounds like a Simpsons character. What DO we need to know about him, anyone?
