I reckon we're better off trading Pick 8 for a 2024 1st round pick.
Right now we need some proven bodies rather than untried kids.
With McKay, Goldstein & probably Gresham coming there's not a lot of spots that could be filled by draftees.
But stacking up next year's picks gives us the option of a quality pick in that draft or trading picks for a really good player that does fill our gaps.

I believe we must use at least 3 draft picks.

These can be used to promote rookies onto the main list - for example Menzie, Baldwin, Voss.

As it stands, we have: 4 spaces on senior list from retirements and delistings, and 1 space on the rookie list. The two spaces created by the delistings of Munkara and McBride don't count as they were both category B

We are also likely to lose another senior spot (BZT) and a rookie spot (MDA) ... these aren't confirmed until a deal is actually done (remember at the end of 2021, we were going to get Dunkley, but a deal couldn't be done... but it is very likely these two will go).

There is also the possibility of moving Shiel on as a trade from Gresham

So it is likely that we will have 7 spots, with 3 being reserved for Goldstein, McKay and Gresham. This leaves 4 spots without even cutting Voss or Shiel.

Even if we pick up Duursma in a trade for BZT, this leaves 3 spots for the draft. Currently our picks are 8, 27, 46, 63

Many pundits are arguing that this year is a shallow draft, so it is likely that 8 and 27 are useful, but it is also likely that picks will be traded as part of the BZT deal.

Goldstein, McKay and Gresham are free or restricted free agents out of contract, so we don't have to trade for them.

It will all become clearer in a week or twos time.

Funny that you say picks 8 & 27 are useful because it's a shallow draft - it's the same reason why I said we'd be better to trade out of this year - because everyone seems to be saying after pick 5 it's pointless. Kind of proven by the Dogs today giving up picks 10 & 17 (and one of next year's 1st rounders) to get pick 4.
I'm not up with all the rules and regs of the draft and list numbers/categories, but if we have to use 3 picks, I'll guess we'll have 46,63 and/or a pick swap or two from the BZT/Duursma deals.
But as you say - it'll all become clear soon enough. Exactly why I don't bother to understand the rules - the club will do whatever it has to do, and I'll just commentate on the outcome after that. :-"

That’s where the bulk of the Main Draft comes from.

Ah crumbs!

I hadn’t noticed this thread before I posted a draft thread the other day. Apologies for the double up and I’m happy if the mods merge the threads or just delete mine. Just post my OP into this one or some sort. Or can I do that myself and delete post / thread and paste in here. I’ll take a look.

Not far away now.

We have picks 9, 31, 35 and 73.

Any chance of getting Harley Reid at pick 9?

Wonder who we will target. Do we need more midfielders? I don’t think so. Do we need more defenders? I don’t think so.

I think we need a key forward type. Maybe a Nick Caddy. But I’m not sure he’s worth the early pick. If Nick Watson is available at 9, then maybe go for him. But he is an ant. There is a Lloyyyyyyyyyyd….

Be interesting with our picks in the 30s.

I think we may go for Archer Reid - Zach’s bro. Hopefully his body is in better nick.

Other options for the night/s:

Harry DeMattia
Charlie Edwards
Joel Freijah
Logan Morris
Luke Lloyd

I like the sound of Lloyd. A jumping Jack forward who can kick accurately. Where have we heard that before?

Get out the popcorn and enjoy the night 🍿

Welcome to the club Nate Caddy, taken by us with pick 10.

I hope he`s as good as the hype suggests. [-o<

Wowza!

So we traded #11 & #31 for #10 - Nate Caddy

Interesting.

He certainly sounds impressive.

Hopefully he isn’t going to be another casualty in our forward stocks fortunes of late.

So we only have two picks left.

Freijah
Morris
Lloyd

Still available

Luamon Lual is a bit of an excitement machine. He is fast and a good and accurate kick and a 2-way runner. Can also play wing. Glad we got him. Was expected to go in top 30 (ESPN ranked him #26) and was featured in the AFL series "The Smokey". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfV5qV8i5kA. Was a Bulldogs academy product, but they didn't have the picks to match our bid (shows the dangers of trading out too many picks). Supposedly similar to Christian Salem or Changkuoth Jiath in style.

Archie Roberts has been mentored by Matty Lloyd and was tipped to go Top 30 (ESPN ranking 23). One of the few left footers in the Seniors. Rebounding half back with speed who is a definite upgrade on Massimo. Can also play as an outside mid. Captained the Sandy Dragons and played for Vic Metro in 2021 and 2023. AFL Academy product. Supposedly similar to Ollie Florent.

I must admit, never thought Roberts would get beyond the 30s. I was angling for Lloyd but we settled on Luamon.

Overall, we have landed some good talent here. Now it’s up to the programs within the club to get the best out of them .
