The One that Got Away

Post by Windy_Hill »

I'm sorry, but i am starting to wonder about the talent in our talent spotting department!!!

First we took Gumbleton instead of Selwood - ooops

Now to make matters worse, we had a chance to take a young Rioli, a kid who idolised Essendon. Instead we took Myers!!

Now it looks like Rioli is a likely Rising Star and All Australian. Meanwhile our guys are holed up in a medical award somewhere having contributed almost nothing to the Bomber cause

Rising star Rioli is good enough to earn All-Australian nod

Michael Voss | August 29, 2008

CYRIL Rioli is set to become the first player since the Adelaide trio of Nigel Smart, Ben Hart and Andrew McKay in 1991-92-93 to win All-Australian selection in his first year in the AFL.

If the All-Australian selectors pick a specialist small forward, rather than filling up on midfielders, Rioli is a must after a sensational introduction to League footy.

The 19-year-old Territorian has been a genuine impact player in the No.2 team in the competition.

That's no easy task and is why Rioli is my pick to win the NAB AFL Rising Star Award.

In a hot field for an award to be decided next week on the 5-4-3-2-1 votes of the All-Australian selectors, he gets my vote over Fremantle Rhys Palmer.

I'd go Rioli (5), Palmer (4), Matthew Kreuzer (3), Trent Cotchin (2) and Garrick Ibbotson (1).

Rioli, 19 last month, has not only played every game in his rookie season, he's been a star.

He's proven he can catch it overhead, find it on the ground, hunt up his opposition and kick goals.

He's a contender for mark of the year and goal of the year, and if there was an award for tackle of the year he'd be in that, too.

He's been the No.1 small forward in the AFL to vindicate the Hawks' decision to take him at No.12 in last year's national draft.

Significantly, at 177cm and 78kg, he leads the tackle count and ranks fifth in contested possessions in a side bound for a grand final. Incredible.

I am very happy with Myers.

If you haven't noticed we have got one leroy jetta who is all the goal sneak that cyril is...jetta just hasn't had a good run at it due to injuries.
not to mention davey who has also been patiently getting that knee of his rehabed.

if there is one area I think essendon has got it covered, its small forwards.

Agree Tom

I also dont think it is relevant that he idolised EFC growing up... Glenn Manton grew up loving EFC also and look how good he was

I don't think we can blame our recruits for Gumby breaking everytime he runs out on a footy ground. We also need to see Gumby play a bit to really see if we lost out on Selwood.

The only sure thing about the draft system is how hard it is to pick talent when a guy is 17!!

He was always rated top 3 until he got injured in his final year - I was very disappointed that we didn't take him. Happy with Myers though. He would have been easily top 5 rising stars this year if he had have played 20 games. Happy with Reimers and Houli as third rounders from last year, too!

We've done really well with recruiting talented kids - just can't keep them on the park.

I had him in my dreamteam most of the year. Hardly played him. Reckon Vossy's kidding himself if he thinks he'll win it over Palmer...

Sorry guys, we may have talented youngsters but they are as brittle as my grans good crystal sherry glasses.

I rekon had we drafted Selwood and Rioli we would be absolutely delighted. As it is we are trying to find excuses for why none of our early picks has fired!!!

Of course, if we had drafted Selwood and Rioli they would have spent the whole season out injured and we would be angsting instead about why we didn't take Gumbleton and Myers.

Myers is quality. Had a freak injury (ie not soft tissue related) but he will, or already is, a good player. Jeez you lot are quick to jump off...

Myers will be better than both Rioli and Palmer. He has a touch of the Judd about him - just an observation. This is one choice in recruiting I am totally comfortable with.

Groan. Another thread about the fact we, along with 13 other clubs, don't have either Rioli or Selwood on our list.

Yeah, right Vossy.
yeah voss, absolute gun footballer, obviously a really good bloke.

but i reckon otherwise hes a bit of a dingbat as a commentator and I am really not sure how he'd translate into a coach.

1 simple answer to all of this...
It is not the players that were the problem...
I really believe that Quinn was responsible for our injurys - the Guys not being conditioned properly...

Lets face facts - It is not 6 or 7 that are injured - it is now over 20...

That is bloody rediculous and I would go as far to say if we had Selwood and Rioli - They too would have joined our list...

All I can say is Thank god he is gone...New fitness coach - 1 of the very best I hope [-o<

Lets just wait and see what happens in 09 as i am sure that things will be a lot different...

They can't all be soft Can They???

Well he is west coasts fitness coach this year.

have a little look at their injury list.(or browse a forum and see how the season has been overall for them.

i personally think the game is so fast and so hard now, it is really tough getting a young list up strong enough to handle the rigours of AFL football.

its won't just be getting rid of quinn, it will be because our players are all that one year older and stronger which will help them.

Don't you reckon that Cyril is the sort of player that can have an impact straight away because of his position and his size? Whereas blokes like Gumby and Myers take longer to develop. Cyril and Selwood might be doing better now cause they're close to their potential, but it's the upside of a player you gotta take into account too.

Blokes like Mark McGough (if you remember him!!) or even Richard Tambling can storm onto the scene in a blaze of glory and everyone gets so excited because they're so young, but in reality they never get better than where they're at.

Don't worry boys, If Myers and Gumby get on the park they'll prove to be good investments, I guess we just have to be patient and let them develop and mature.

Go Dons hey!

Are you a bit bored Windy?

I suppose Hird is also the one who got away, as is Houli, Reimers, Lonergan.

If only Richmond piced up Franklin instead of Tambling. If only Carlton picked up Ryder instead of Kennedy.

If only............Gary ablett Jnr was not related to Gary Ablett Snr.

big deal!!!!!!!! Take the good with the bad, hindsight is a wonderful thing isn't it.

I agree with Rosso to some extent. No point getting to beat up about gun players getting away, just groan a little or make sarcastic jokes (eg. Joel Reynolds was better than Mitchell and Chapman).

With Selwood, I don't care because good bigs are probably more important than good midfielders and we have a great midfield group anyway. Once Gumby gets fit, he'll be a gun.

On Cyril, he's good, but we already have small quick guys, Myers is quick with a huge kick and ads a bit of size to the midfield, so no complaints there. He'll also be very good.
Aaron Francis is the Messiah.
