The Greatest Player Trades of All Time

Post by Windy_Hill »

1 - Tony Lockett to Sydney - Plugger was going nowhere at St Kilda. His move to the Swans resurrected the game in Sydney and he went on to play some amazing games.

2. Terry Daniher and Neale Daniher to Essendon - Both became club captains and champions. Lead to a dynasty of Danihers that has resulted in 5 players bearing this famous name having played for the Dons.

3. Ron Barassi to Carlton - possible the biggest name in Football leaves Melbourne to play an integral part in the rejuvenation of Carlton, as both a player and coach

4. Chris Judd to Carlton - probably broke the rules in doing it, but Carlton cheat their way to pinching another great player - B&F in his first year and likely to win many more

5. Justin Madden to Carlton - with ample big men at the time, Bombers off load the youger Madden to arch rivals Calton - 'Harry' goes on to play 300+ games for the Blues.

Stephen Milne to St.Kilda - couldn't crack a game at the Bombers and goes on to play 164 games and kick 330 goals to date.

I don't know if you'd call them trades due to the transient rule change in the 1970's that saw NM recruit a bunch of great players...Davis, Wade, Rantal...who else did they get?

Ian Stewart to Richmond was a good one!

Peverill to EFC! :D

The trade that saw Salmon go to Hawthorn has always been considered a good trade for all clubs (3?) concerned.

Maybe Barry Hall to Sydney (though not as successful as Plugger).

What about the deal with Todd Ridley etc that brought Lloyd & Lucas to Essendon?

Roger Merrett to Brisbane Bears - went on to play more games and kick more goals for the Bears

Alan Ezard to Essendon - given away by Melbourne as too small. 184 games, 200 goals, 2 premierships and a B&F at Essendon. And an extraordinary mark over Harry Madden's head in 1986.

Sean Denham for John Barnes.

Barnes was going no where at Essendon with Madden and Salmon in front of him. He goes to Geelong and plays in 3 GF's, Denham comes to us and wins a flag, playing on (and destroying) CvNt Williams
He kicks on the left
He kicks on the riiiiiiiiigggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhttttttttttttt

Def the Salmon deal. Involved:

Darren Jarman to help win Adelaide 2 premierships. Certainly the 97 one off his own boot. What a last quarter!
Wellman to become an AA at Essendon
Salmon to become an AA / B&F winner at Hawthorn. A couple of times I believe?

Everyone's happy.

Wellman won a premiership with us of course as well!

Don't forget we got Barnard in that trade for Salmon. A very handy player.
