This is why he is frustrating. This is what he is capable of. To see this sort of game from Monfries, but with a space of 18 AFL matches isn't what successful careers are about. He needs to even out his performances - or narrow the gap between his very poor games to his really good ones. Any reason why he can't sustain this sort of effort on a weekly basis?

Gus is still young...hopefully with more experience there will be many more games like last night and not so many poor ones...such an exciting player to watch!

That would be nice but he needs to be more consistent. Gus should really be starting to make that kind of impact on games every week.

The boy is 22 and we've got 70 odd games out of him and invested a lot of time in him. His whole time at Essendon has been during a lean time.

The coach has changed, many players have been let go, there's lots of injuries, a lot of experience not there.

This season especially the last couple of weeks we've been up and down like a whore's knickers.

Our backline included Myers, Hooker, Pears, Houli, Dempsey, it could've been a disaster but it wasn't it was our night, they did their job and clicked. Inconsistency is part of a young team and player until they're cherry ripe.

Yes Gus has been inconsistent but he is not alone. What we do know is that he CAN play and as he gets more games and as our young team gels further his consistancy should get better too.

I honestly think he needs to bring back the Hollywood, on Friday night he just threw caution to the wind and it paid off. He has the skills he just needs to have belief in them. Go for the screamers Gus, take guys on.

Anyone wanna still stamp Monfries' papers?

I'm definitely still not a fan, even still, but he was superb last night.
came out a winner against Luke Hodge. I do not know what else you would have to do other than that to get your papers stamped.

He is a player as said. glad to see he produced this week and knights didnt do what I thought he might need to do(drop him) to do it.
obviously took some of the responsibility for the shit performance against brisbane.

Shane Crawford just said on the Sunday Footy Show that Gus on Friday night reminded him of Mark Mercuri. Not sure how accurate that is - but certainly indicative of what a good night Gus had.

Long way to go to get even close to my man but the role Gus played on Fri night was pretty similar to the way that Mercs used to play.

Matthew Knights' perspective - http://www.essendonfc.com.au/matches/pr ... on=preview:
Matthew Knights wrote: Angus Monfries always asks for the tough roles and he likes the tough roles. He’s turned himself into a very team orientated Essendon player. He manages to get disposals and kicks some goals but he does a lot of team things in chasing and tackling. His communication in the forward line is sensational and that’s what we want our emerging leaders to do and I think Angus is a big plus for us in the forward line when he does that for us. His role on Hodge last week was integral to the team winning. His role this week may be a bit different but you know he is just as important.
Strange how sometimes supporters and coaches are at odds over how a player is going.

Very important player. When Essendon wins games against good opposition he has played well. Think back to Collingwood last year and Hawthorn this year. Is still young and hopefully will develop into a midfielder.

True. But then we will see how they actually really think the player is going by the B & F placements. I think Gus has only reached the top 10 once, and that was last year (much to my surprise).

Why?
Why is it that every time a player comes along who is good and not a tall player, everyone wants him to become a midfielder?

Specialist forwards and backs are still important IMO.

I agree. I don't think he has what it takes to be a midfielder at all. His best football has been played on a HFF, and that's exactly what we need.

This is why Gus is so frustrating and hasnt reached the next level in his footy career yet.... he plays the game of his life one week then comes out and plays an absolute shocker the week after... should he be put back to Bendigo even for a week to shake him up or just leave him in the team?

Wont it be great when Skippy, McVeigh, Reimers and co become available so there is a bit more competition for Gus's spot.
