nice article...

re cyril, not just him that 2007 draft is turning into a good one.

i'd have the first 16 from 07 over the first 16 in 2006(hyped as 'super draft')

If sheeds were still coaching he would have chosen Rioli no doubt. I cant believe we didnt pick him.

It wasnt like he was a smokey or not rated. Ppl on THIS message boards were talking about hoping we could get this kid years ago. We had the chance and didnt :(

Some say we have enough of his sort...ahh no we dont. Easily enough room for rioli.

Davey forward line
Dempsey backline
Lovett midfiled
Rioli forward/midfield

and although he's not a small... Ryder, ruck...Damn thats some talent right there.

Jetta...still not sure what to think of him yet, until he makes an impact.

No matter what Myers does it was the wrong pick IMO. Hope ol Myers can make it though, its not his fault we picked him.

We chose David Myers first round in the year Cyril was drafted, 2007. Sheedy was still coaching.

looking back on 07 had you known how he would be playing now he would have been chosen much sooner. (prob gone top 3)

he certainly has had a good ride into league footy.(similar to Joel Selwood in that he is a gun young player given the freedom of running around with a very good bunch of players).

Cyril was always going to be top 3 but had a fairly serious injury in his final year (broken leg or something) so the recruiters didn't see much of him. Kreuzer and Cotchin were always 1 and 2 and the Doggies wanted a tall (Grant or Henderson) but the WA boys really tore it up at the carnival (Masten, Palmer, Myers) which meant that they ended up going 3, 6 and 7. I couldn't believe Rioli slipped all the way through to Hawthorn. 2007 draft (Rioli and Dew) probably won them the 2008 flag.

Sheedy was sacked/notified that he would not be getting a new contract mid 2007. By draft day 2007 Matty Knights was in charge, but it was the recruiting team that essentially picked David Myers.

I suppose the question mark over Rioli is if he will develop the motor that will allow him to become a fulltime midfielder, such as Leon Davis has finally been able to achieve in the last couple of seasons. Because if not, by the very nature of the position they play small forwards can tend to be inconsistent.
