Solly Retires

Post by swoodley »

Dean Solomon has retired effective immediately due to persistent knee problems.

And so another of the great 2000 team calls it a day.

Well done Solly on getting the most out of yourself over the years.

Not many AFL players get to retire with a premiership medallion and you certainly earned yours.

Best wishes in your retirement.

No doubt this knee problem was caused or significantly inflamed by the fact he was forced to bulk up considerably from about 2002-2006 so Sheeds could play him as a key defender.

Great servant of the club, great clubman, who did some mammoth jobs on Richo. Won a B&F playing as a midfielder from memory. His poor on field discipline used to drive me crazy at times, but he was a great servant for the club. Was well past his best when he left to go to Freo, so it didn't hurt much.

If Remiers pulls his head in a bit, and Houli hardens up a bit will work out as a very good trade for us.

Solly never won a B&F but the rest of the post is a good summation ealesy. People forget that he added quite a bit extra weight to enable him to play on bigger forwards and that was around the time his injury worries started.

Those two "ifs" are good points as well.

I remember he used to play with a picture of Adam Ramanauskas tucked away in his sock to remind himself of his good friend but to also inspire himself to be more courageous on field given what Rama was going through off field.

With Solly's retirement, only Dustin Fletcher remains from the 2000 premiership team. (not to mention the 1993 Premiership team)

Solly was a gem, pre major knee injury. He formed part of that magnificent "wrecking crew" in our defence with Damien Hardwick, Mark Johnson, Dean Wallis and Paul Barnard. Fk they hit the packs hard! Solly played with quite a bit of dash to go with his rugged play, and was a vital part of our dominant team. Then the game changed, and Solly's style couldn't adapt. More scruitiny on the hard bump and general rough stuff was stamped out and Solly's effectiveness was lost. Seemed to get frustrated with the game later in his career.

Gotta love blokes who put their body on the line for the benefit of the team and their team mates. Solly will always be a part of our great history.

Solly was a great legacy of the Sheedy years with a focus on some really hard bastards on the backline. Benny mentioned the other members of this tough elite, but I always thought that Solly was the ring leader.

Another member of the superb 2000 premiership team to finally succomb to injury and there is no doubt we got the best of him.

Great effort, Solly. Will really miss you.
Too far for Baker now he's on to it, now he’s got it, OPEN GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Dons are in front by one point at the 8 minute mark

What a great servant he was for our club. He could be damn frustrating at times but it was brilliant watching him intimidate the opposition.

As others have already said, a great servant of the Club.

All the best for your retirement, Solly.

Might make a good (assistant) coach, maybe?

Completely agree... loved the way he threw himself at the footy and he was an integral part of our 2000 hard nut half back line.

So sad that Bomber champs like Johnno and now Solly had to end their careers in purple and green. :(

Lot of love in here from a some people I remember, a few short years ago calling him Dean Dollarman...

Was always fond of him as a Bomber and was sad to see him go. Had a lot of respect for him after the Rama/sock story came out... Onya Solly.
