Brisbane Bombers

Post by paddyl90 »

ONE of the teams vying for inclusion in an expanded NRL competition hope to take off as early as 2013 as the Brisbane Bombers.

That's the name bid chairman Craig Davison is tipped to unveil, along with the team's official playing colours of navy blue and orange, at a major announcement tomorrow morning at Albion Park Raceway.

Several potential names were suggested by 12,000 fans including Braves, Bayliners and Barracudas, before market research strongly recommended Bombers.

While the name might anger AFL officials and fire up fans of Melbourne club Essendon, who believe the Bombers' name is their property, there are already instances of NRL-AFL cross-code clashes with Wests Tigers and Richmond (Tigers), and Canterbury Bulldogs and Western Bulldogs sharing the same nicknames.

Manly (Sea Eagles) and West Coast (Eagles) also share similar names.

The bid team's logo will feature a bomber pilot and air force wings with the name Bombers embroidered across the top of the pilot's aviator cap and goggles.

Checks with ASIC confirm the name Brisbane Bombers was registered on July 5.

Davison however declined to confirm Bombers as the name the team would announce.

The inner-city trotting and greyhound complex, Albion Park, a virtual ghost track these days, is rumoured as the Bombers' likely home base.

Trotting and greyhound racing is relocating to a re-developed $50 million multi-purpose track at Deagon on Brisbane's northside.

With plans for state-of-the-art training fields, a community club, pool, gymnasium and administration offices, their set-up would rival any in the NRL.

The bid team has already flagged its interest in rugby union superstars Quade Cooper and Sonny Bill Williams and been approached by agents representing more than 20 NRL players interested in signing up.

Bid directors Davison, Nick Livermore and Bill Rae, who have dedicated thousands of hours to putting together their detailed expansion proposal, have letters of intent from about 20 players and a shortlist of coaching candidates and potential chief executives.

What's everyone's opinions on this?

I'm not strong either way. I'm not angry, but also it's a pretty non-common name to take unlike an animal, e.g. tigers

not a fan.

when anyone talks about "the bombers" in this country in terms of top level professional sport, they know its Essendon.

and thats how it should stay.

mind you we should be more proud of Essendon Football Club. take Man U in premier league soccer, they don't have exclusivity over the nickname "the red devils". A stack of football clubs have that nickname.

hoping it doesn't get up and the NRL goes for a different expansion bid.

The article about this on foxsports.com.au has quite a bit of feedback from (I assume) NRL supporters and they seems almost universally against it.

Storm in a teacup at this stage as the consortium involved here has not yet won admittance to the competition.

While the AFL is expanding into new frontiers like Western Sydney and the Gold Coast, the NRL is expanding into.... Brisbane.

Meh ... storm in a teacup

A wannabe club in a non-viable competition propped up by a media company currently suffering international condemnation, diving share prices and pending lawsuits ... in contrast the AFL is a national competition that props up local print media.

Its sad that the NRL would welcome the weekly attendance of our least patronised clubs (eg Norf) for their most patronised clubs.

That being said - if the EFC and the AFL haven't trademarked and protected "bombers" - someone should lose thir job.

perhaps the EFC should consider running a NRL side. make a little extra coin.

I think carlton thought about that with soccer and got shot down pretty quickly by the AFL though..

Little Ripper,

i am pretty sure Carlton did get a soccer team in the old NSL for a few years.... Archie Thompson started with them, also collingwood had the Collingwood Warriors before that....

It looked like Carltons experiment was going to work, for a while but then it went belly up..... ha ha.

Collingwoods team was a disaster....

I'd be dissapointed if this happens, maybe we offer a compesnation and let them be called the Brisbane Same olds.

Simply won't happen. The brand is too valuable to allow any shitkicking team from another code to hijack it.
Too far for Baker now he's on to it, now he’s got it, OPEN GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Dons are in front by one point at the 8 minute mark

1. Surely they could have thought of something else so that none of this was even an issue.
2. What do the 'Bombers' have to do with Brisbane anyway? It has some relevance for our club, what does it mean for Brissy?

Never heard of the Brisbane line Ossie?

It was the line drawn by McArthur in WW2 that the allies were willing to surrender to the Japanese army as the American bombers flying out of Sydney could bomb the crap out of the occupied zone and return home to safeguard NSW and VIC.

Some things never change.
