Talk about everything Essendon. Past, Present and Future if it's about the Bombers this is the place to be.

our first rounders....

Post by little_ripper »

since 2005.

Ryder
Gumbleton
Myers
Hurley
Melksham
Heppell.

imo we have just about got two of the best in draft in Heppell and Hurley. Ryder is definitely almost the equal of any of his first round 2005 peers, Melksham is firmly in our best 22.

Really that is an absolutely outstanding job. =D>

Of course there are guys who develop into great players plucked from elsewhere, but I reckon Dodoro and co have done an outstanding job.

Everyone bitches and moans about the quality of the EFC list and how we missed Cyril for Myers, but still have a look at the flip side at the guys playing in the red and black brought in since 05 onwards.

To get Hurley at 5 and Heppell at 8 is just pure gold.

(of course we have great rookie stories in howlett/crammers and later nat draft picks in guys like pears etc too)

Agreed. Myers hasn't improved much (if at all) but the rest are good to excellent footballers.
However, the gaping hole in our list was generated between 2000 and 2005. Hille and Stanton are the best two out of that whole time period (Hille may have been 1999 actually).

Little Ripper you need to walk back into the land of reality. As much as like Ryder, these other players you have to rate much higher at this stage.

Kennedy is only just starting to show his worth.
Agree with Pendles.
Mitch Clark is inconsistent and would swap Ryder for him.
Higgins is junk - 1 good game out of 10 - and is injured all the time.
Hurn is a decent backman, nothing more.
Varcoe is a flash in the pan.
Birchall is just above a plodder.

yeah thats a tough one.

2004 the talent didn't really bat that deep. we took monfries with our first pick, and with hindsight if you look at those taken after, there aint a lot of superstars. name some guys we should have picked instead of gus?

2003 was kepler, probably another myers call, altho bradley seems to have blossomed a bit in a new environment.

2002 laycock, again in this draft after the first round we picked reasonably well and it wasn't that decent.

2000 and 2001 were shockers.

carl,

I don't count guys picked above our choice each year, we never had a shot at them in the first place.

Pendlebury was picked before Ryder, same with Kennedy. Other than that I'd take Ryder over the other blokes.

Where is Gumby? Or was he "out injured" on draft day as well? But, yes 2 out of 5 is a lot better than the first half of the decade where we used to go 1 out of 10.

But hey go ahead and be happy about it. The club has conditioned you over the last 10 years to expect nothing more than average, and that's exactly what you are getting.

Port Adelaide's got a metric shitload of first and second rounders, and that club is about to disappear up it's own arse.

It's just a simple lottery. The most integral part of the recruitment process happens after they walk through the front door of the joint.

We got one crack at the top picks each time where every other team, except Geelong got 2 sometimes for a few years running. Collingwood made a GF, tanked and got 2 f****** picks the next year. Look what those picks are doing now. Look what Carlton's did on the weekend.

Ok I missed Gumbleton. (don't know how that happened, i guess he really is the forgotten man!).

I don't think the club made a bad call there, he has just been shit out of luck injury wise. its not as if he is a proven dud otherwise.
