Mannnn, I'm so tired of this.
With the benefit of hindsight, yes, probably it wasn't a good trade to get Williams.

But folks, this is what's called taking a gamble. It's been done before, and will be again.
As stated elsewhere, it was a thin draft - so what would you rather? ... untried kids, or someone with a proven track record?

So it's cost the club a milion. Over 3 years. I have news for you all - that's NOT a huge sum of money in football these days.

I'm sure the bloke was trying, even with a crapped out knee. If he wanted an armchair ride he could have sat on the sidelines and collected his money.

Methinks Bradshaw going to Sydney was a similar case, but I doubt anyone here would have been saying the Swans were crazy.

And here's another thought - how much have we invested into Gumbleton so far? (Or Courtney Johns before him?) Both gambles, knowing full well they had injury issues. But at least Williams had a record of being a good player, and we may never get anything back from Gumby either. Of course I hope we do, but if we don't it's going to look just as bad in hindsight but until pretty recently plenty of folks in here have been hailing Gumby as the next messiah.

I've never seen anything of Williams to suggest that he was anything other than just an ordinary reasonable bloke, much like most out there, so rather than stick the boots into him upon his retirement, why not just say "Ah well, it didn't work out the way we'd like for anyone involved, but good luck to you Mark"?

Anyway, rant over, I just get so frustrated with the lack of common human decency in here by some of the people some of the time.
ps - yes, i know much of your frustration has been directed at the recruiters responsible, but....see above!!

Fair point Nudder ... I have no anger or angst at Williams ... however I do at Knights and the selectors.

I console myself that at least we did better that year than did BrisVossy ...

So utterly sad that this great club has played home to so much washed up talent. You getter better deals in an Op Shop

But so fortunate that we've played host to so many briliant players over the years and had so much success too.

He's head and shoulders above all those spuds you listed BD. All of them collectively wouldn't have taken the kind of cash straight out the front door that Williams did.

Maybe should never have got him BUT I'm sick to death of hearing on the footy shows tonight how it was a terrible trade on ESSENDON's behalf.

Ummmmmmmmmm the trade was done by Matthew Knights. Why doesn't this get mentioned? He was the coach at the time so the buck must stop with him.

He was the coach at the time and did the trade while working for the club.

I'm sure it wasn't him making the decision on his own either.
