Some positive thinking for Bomber Fans v Carlton

Post by Doctor Strangelove »

Hi all.

Our wins have been a pretty scratchy but there are some good things on the rise:
1. Tayte Pears looked to be getting in form in the last 3 quarters of the GC game
2. Leroy Jetta is spark of joy whenever he is near the ball
3. EFC have a great key position spine , with multiple options
4. the mid-field is "capable" of breaking even against good sides

Now for the ideas for Carlton:
1. bring Henry Slattery back, if he is in form (instead of McVeigh) to take a Carlton small.
2. Angus Monfries to the back line to take a Carlton small
3. Slattery, Lonergan and Cale Hooker for Dempsey (injured), Davey and Carlile

Let's hang in there !!!!!!!!

From last year:

"Essendon caused the upset of the AFL season with a stunning four-point win over previously-unbeaten competition leaders Geelong on Saturday night.

Geelong went into the round 15 match at Etihad Stadium as short-priced favourites against the Bombers, who were on a five-game losing streak, but it was Essendon who triumphed 18.7 (115) to 16.15 (111) to claim their first win over Geelong since round 18, 2005.

Running halfback Dyson Heppell was a match-winner for the Bombers along with Jake Melksham, while small forward Angus Monfries kicked three goals."
After Geelong kicked the first three, we were out to 12/1 at the ground.

Coming up against the Cats, we had lost our previous 5. We were given absolutely no chance and remember, no Watson.

Point I am making is that anything is possible. We need everyone firing and a lot of luck, but given some of our efforts in the past when given no chance, it can be done. Last year there was no team as formidable as Geelong and yet we overcame them.

I can only refer to Gimper's comments that if nothing else, I want to see nothing left in the tank by the time the siren goes.
Too far for Baker now he's on to it, now he’s got it, OPEN GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Dons are in front by one point at the 8 minute mark

If Collingwoods midfield isn't capable against the blues, where do you think that leaves ours? Carltons second stringers would almost be our firsts.

Slatts - I don't think he has the pace, nor the disposal efficiency.
Monfries as a small defender? No he will play as a lead up forward. He actually plays well against Carlton.
Dempsey looks ok to play, Davey played well enough for a 1st game back and Carlisle likewise I think will hold his spot until Hooker can break out in the 2s.

Reimers may or may not keep his spot after only one game. Some very weak attack on the footy reimers on the weekend.

FWIW I think Essendon will fight hard with the Blues. That being said, I predict we will be down by 20 points at quarter time, 40 points by half time and over 10 goals by the final siren. I just cannot see us stopping the Betts and Garlett show, nor winning the midfield dual.

Hurley and Crameri are going to need to have a field day up forward and Jetta needs to have his kicking boots on as well.

What makes the comparison unhinge is the difference between Etihad and the MCG.

I do fear the effects of this love, all of a sudden, for one Henry Slattery...

So he was an emergency for the GC game...
And yes, he was named in the best for Bendigo. But let's just put this into perspective here - it was against Melbourne's seconds!!!

The case against Henry = Eddie Betts - yes, Eddie Betts - kicking 8 goals on him last year... in the one game!

Nuff said!

I'm all for being optimistic, but there's too much positivity in this thread even for me.

Carlton are in unbelievable form. They will kick 25-26 goals unless we pull out a supreme defensive effort. And we generally struggle to do that on the G.

Carlton by 60+ (unfortunately).

Yeah if you look at it objectively rather than subjectively through essendon eyes. Carlton would monster nearly every side in the comp at the moment, they are running hot. Its the worst time to be playing them really.

That being said, playing a side in red hot form is good for our guys. They need to play stiff competition to improve.
