Joe to debut....

Talk about everything Essendon. Past, Present and Future if it's about the Bombers this is the place to be.

So how did he go???
I'm undecided.
Got a decent amount of the ball, with little influence, but on the other hand looked seriously outpointed in marking contests and ruck.
Ho hum, either way, congratulations to him and hopefully he'll develop over the next couple of years.

Outbodied too easily in some marking contests, which can be excused for a first gamer playing against seasoned AFL back men. Lead up well and presented a target, took some good marks. Clearly needs to work on his goal kicking because those two set shots in the last quarter were pretty easy shots and he should've been able to convert one (despite the pressure).

All in all a promising debut, saw enough to think the hype is justified but it will take a little bit if time for him to make it.

I thought he was ok. I thought he took a couple of grabs that should have been paid. Moved ok, got a decent feel when the ball is in dispute, and reasonable hands. Would have been nice to slot one. It'll come.
Really hope he gets another run next week.

could have had 2 goals....contested better as the game went....a beautiful pass to Hurley in the first half.

Above average debut in my opinion

Certainly no memorable debut, but got a bit of it and looked ok. He'll learn about the tempo of AFL and will dominate the game at some stage. 15 disposals and 5 marks for a big kid is a good start. Could have kicked a couple to add to that as well.

Anyway, would have been a big thrill for him to be involved in such a win =D>

Yeah not the amazing start most wished for but hope next week he can get a few goals next week vs the Suns. The boys put him under pressure a lot early and focused hard on getting him into the game. Maybe expected too much. But was a great first game...welcome to the big time. Wish he got at least one. Oh well. Can't wait to see more.

I was sort of hoping for a Daniher last quarter heroics a la his Uncle Neale 32 year ago against the dirty, filthy SCUM.

Some posters here will remember that game.

The delivery to him was horrible, it allowed his opponent to push him out of the way easily. When he was able to run and jump at the ball he was much better. In 3-4 years he will be much harder to stop in contested situations.

Spot on.
Same story for our whole forward line in the first half - just bombed onto their heads.
Question is - did the forwards cause it by not leading into space, or was it the players delivering the footy? (can't see enough on TV)
But....noticeable when Carlisle went forward that he made one-on-one contests in space, and we looked far more dangerous as a result.
Makes me think it was the forwards fault in first half.
Which makes me think the team is better with Hurley as a back and Carlisle as a forward.

I reckon Joe had the perfect debut.

If he had been hopeless, that would have been embarrassing and maybe killed the boy's confidence.

On the other hand, if he had starred, that leads to huge expectations every week and can be a big problem.

He was just in the middle - did some good things, but didn't dominate. Perfect.

Very good point.

It certainly wasn't a Jobe Watson style debut

Nor was it a Scott Cummings

Was it just the 1 possession Jobe had, an ordinary handball to Rama? Now he's won a Brownlow and hopefully be the captain of a side that wins the flag this year...

Like Billyduckworth said, it was perfect. Imagine in a couple years time (and a couple of pre-seasons) when he is a man what he'll be doing. After that performance there is no doubt he will be a star.

It was 1 possession and after the game, the on field interviewer gave him the match ball to which Jobe responded with something like "thanks, just doubled my possessions" It was very funny

Did enough to show us what's just under the surface. Moves superbly for a bloke his size and his kicking style is as good as anyone.
Glad the debut game is now in the bag and look forward to next week.
Too far for Baker now he's on to it, now he’s got it, OPEN GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Dons are in front by one point at the 8 minute mark

Yes. There was one in particular where three or four players completely misread the flight and he got essentially an uncontested mark from what should have been a pack situation.
Aaron Francis is the Messiah.
