Big price to pay but happy nevertheless. Put it this way, I would have been substantially more pissed if we had not landed him.

Definitely gives us a Top 6 mid field to go with an already A+ Defence and B+ Forward Line (Could easily go to A+ if Fantasia and Daniher can stay healthy and in form)

We can field two very good midfield rotations at Centre Bounces with a not bad depth option as well

EG -

i) Bellchambers, Smith, Heppell, Myers (2018's MIP)
ii)Bellchambers, Sheil, Merrett, McGrath
Depth - McKernan, Zaharakis, Langdon, Parish

You could throw Stringer, McKenna, Fantasia, Guelfi, Walla as occasional centre bounce options

Congratulations to the club on MEGA - Making Essendon Great Again

Agree with No. 9 for Shiel (not sure about 32 - big shoes to fill there ;-) )

He’s sacrificed a lot of $$$$ to be with us. I’m ok with 2 first rounders. We get a 2nd rounder back next year. Potentially, it could mean we lose pick 18 but gain 19. Realistically, it could mean we lose pick 12 but gain 31.

We paid what we had to get the deal done and don't think for a moment not getting the deal done was an option.

If after nominating us over clubs offering far more cash, if we failed to land Shiel it would have been a disaster. You can rest assured that we'd never be able to get another player to nominate us as their club of choice while Dodoro was still there, particularly Paul Connors clients.

Although I suspect this deal was probably done about a week ago and the AFL held it back to the closing stages so their "broadcast Muppets" could play off the Carlton are trying to swoop in late and steal Shiel and Essendon and Dodoro are being unreasonable and difficult to trade with angles.

The fact that Paul Connors did not make a single media comment placing pressure on either GWS or Ess to force a deal makes it pretty clear it was already done. After all we all know he has no qualms about spouting whatever shit he wants in the media to get his clients where they want to go, eg Ryder and his concerns about a deformed baby.

Great effort to get Sheil in!! Give us a fantastic midfield group capable of going toe to toe with the best in the competition... I feel like two first rounds is a heavy price to pay but we’ve been calling on dodoro to get an Agrade mid for years now so we really couldn’t afford to let the opportunity slip once he nominated us. Hope he has a great career in the Red and Black and really hope he proves he was worth those picks and more! Can’t wait to see him rip games apart next year!! Go Bombers!!

Fantastic. The Super “S” brigade just keeps on growing!

Looking forward to watching him play in red & black. It might be the first time we see some “burst” from the middle since the days of Jason Johnson / James Hird etc

I’d like to see him in #9

15 is an iffy number at the club. 32, well, he could wear it well too!

Well sorry I jumped the gun.

According to Brad Hardie on TAB Radio Perth,so did Adrian Dodoro, who got a bit cocky about the deal and almost cost us the deal.

Apparently someone else in The Club, went into rapid overdrive to help the deal over the line.A Board Member perhaps?

So,take 2,.....

Welcome Dylan(Shiel)to Essendon Football Club and the best of luck in your career with the Bombers!

Honestly, we have used the draft almost exclusively prior to 2018 to bolster our stocks. Our record has not been great when you consider the number of failed or just average first round selections.

We now have a squad that is just screaming out for a player who can be the “Cream on the Top”.

You get a genuine A grade Midfield Dynamo at the peak of his powers who can potentially deliver a Flag and bring 120 plus games to the club.

Or you take a chance on another Gumbleton or Myers for this year’s and next year’s first round picks. Young guys who by which time they mature into senior footballers, assuming they are good enough, will be too late for the likes of Hurley, Hooker, Zaharakis, Bellchambers - in other words, when the Premiership window has passed.

For the club or Dodoro to be sweating over the loss of 2 First Round Draft picks to land Shiel is ridiculous. The should have gone in from day one and said, here are our 2 First Rounders and Laverde please give us Setterfield and Shiel

Well there are lots of rumours but will we ever know the truth. Was it all stage-managed or were we really riding on the edge? Setterfield I could leave out but was really hoping Jack Martin would make it. I believe we missed him because of the ongoing crisis surrounding Shiel but would probably have needed our future first rounder to get him. On the wider question of selection that's my thoughts exactly. Drooling over top end pics, only to have them end up under-performing, or crippled wrecks, while all around us, other clubs went about systemically dotting their list with carefully selected trades and brutally clearing their dead wood.

Really?

Brad Hardie seems to be outside the know rather than inside. Does he just make things up as they go? Gets paid well for just providing unsubstantiated speculation.

Looks like deals were done around this main deal which changed the landscape of what was to be offered. It seems as though we were in a position to let go pick #1 and future 2nd rounder before Hawks got deals that required us to up the ante. Not sure what Hardie was on about. Needs to actually research his stuff better than that.

He’s usually spot on,though most of the time, that’s not hard to do if Fremantle are involved.

So it would appear that player trading has now evolved into the three following scenarios

1). Any playe is up for grabs, regardless of contract time to run, if the offer is good enough and mutually agreed by club and player. However, given the contract, the buying club will in all likelihood pay overs. The flip side of course is The selling club may need to be a little careful or end up retaining the player and getting a less attractive Free Agency compensatory draft selection

2). A player’s contract has expired ( or is expiring) and his club has to trade or allow the player to slip through to the Pre Season Draft. Still a risk for the player as they have no say where they may land in the draft ( although I am sure player managers are prejudicing this process). Ultimately the buying club will pay a fair price or even unders as the seller is in a bad negotiating position.

3). Free Agency

Shiel obviously fell into the first category which is where a lot of “star players” will likely go before they become eligible for Free Agency.

Fair enough.

We don’t get to hear much about his bellyaching rants over here.

Never mind. Chances are Shiel will be seen well over there. Could be that Hardie has a plan of sorts. None the wiser.
