why would the AFL like to get rid of blockbusters like Anzac day? surely they would love these games?

Well, for any conference system to exist, there must be an opportunity for the AFL to have some flexibility over fixturing.

When you have a situation where everybody plays each other at least once, then the opportunity is there.

Exactly - and this will be possible in a conference system. Collingwood and Essendon can continue to play ANZAC day, no matter what conference they sit in as they will always play each other at least once a year.
