Clash jumper - its going to happen.

Talk about everything Essendon. Past, Present and Future if it's about the Bombers this is the place to be.

Clash jumper - its going to happen.

Post by little_ripper »

Another huge push for EFC to come up with another clash jumper. I don't like it and although I like the cause for the one-off jumper(buckle up), imo the jumper itself just comes across as gimmicky and devalues the essendon strip.

thoughts?

Also something to note, according to this article Hille is a vice captain, this is a mistake.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/d ... 113c9.html

AN IMPASSIONED plea delivered to the AFL by ruckman David Hille has led to Essendon being given the green light to wear a radical one-off jumper.

UPDATE: SEN radio reports that the jumper will be worn by Essendon players on Friday week in the match against Collingwood at the MCG.

The Bombers have won special approval for their second one-off jumper this season, which will transform their famous red sash into a seatbelt to commemorate the 40th anniversary of compulsory seatbelts in Victoria.

Hille, who survived a fatal car accident that killed three of his teenaged schoolmates in 1998, was in the front seat and was wearing a seatbelt. He has agreed to become the face of the ''buckle up'' campaign for the TAC this week.

The Age understands that under an unofficial deal achieved as a result of the ''buckle up'' jumper Essendon will finally agree to succumb to the AFL's direction and produce a clash guernsey in 2011.

The Bombers are one of only two clubs - Collingwood is the other - which has steadfastly refused to move away from its traditional black jumper with red sash. This has caused angst among other clubs - most recently Melbourne - which was forced to don a white jumper against the Bombers at the Demons round-15 home game.

Friday night's special seatbelt jumper will see the Bombers' red sash come equipped with a seatbelt-style buckle and comes after the Adam Ramanauskas-inspired ''Call to Arms'' Clash for Cancer game, which saw Essendon's left armlet trimmed with yellow.

The AFL initially refused the Essendon-TAC proposal for the seatbelt guernsey on the basis that each club is allowed only one ''one-off'' jumper per season.

AFL boss Andrew Demetriou last night confirmed that a deputation to the league's commercial department by the TAC, Bombers' chief executive Ian Robson and club vice-captain Hille had swayed the competition to make an exception to its rule.

''David Hille was one of a group who made a representation to us and we believed that an exception was understandable given the cause involved and the one-off nature of the anniversary,'' Demetriou said.

''It is true that based on our policy only one exception to the jumper rule is allowed each season.''

Essendon will now be forced to sell to its members the concept of a new-look clash guernsey, something it has always insisted would require constitutional change.

The AFL is understood to have ramped up the pressure on the Bombers given dissatisfaction from Melbourne and St Kilda over the clash jumper in their games and the fact the Gold Coast Suns have unveiled a jumper that is predominantly red.

Hille's passion for the cause was hinted at after the 2010 Dreamtime clash with Richmond. Voted best afield that night he urged fans to ''drive safely'' in his acceptance speech.

When The Age revealed the Bombers' plans two months ago Robson said: ''What lies at the heart of this is that young people's lives can be saved. We are simply asking the AFL to show some flexibility.''

Hille had been at the Dandenong Southern Stingrays for just two weeks before becoming one of eight Peninsula Grammar schoolmates who climbed into a station wagon that later swerved and hit a tree in Mount Eliza 12 years ago this November.

Of the eight, five survived the crash that horrified the most seasoned members of the accident investigation squad. The under-age driver, Hille's friend Gene Thomas, was sentenced to two years in a youth detention centre.

Hille was the front-seat passenger who wore a seat belt and climbed out with barely a scratch, screaming for someone to call an ambulance. The experience was exacerbated by the fact that his father, Ray Hille, is principal of Peninsula School.

''For a long time we just got stuck into the footy,'' recalls the Stingrays coach at the time, Rob Dean. ''But as this year progressed it was a matter of trying to tell him he wasn't responsible and getting him to acknowledge to himself that it wasn't his fault. He had to push on with his life but, of course, he was carrying the emotional baggage of the tight school community and impending court case and being a witness.''

In an interview with The Sunday Age a year after the accident, Hille said that while his school had offered counselling he hadn't deemed it necessary and that 17 and 18-year-old boys are not generally good at talking about their problems.

''I've spoken to the [school] reverend a few times, and the school was great,'' he said. ''Dad took most of the pressure off me. But I hope you mention Steve Kennedy and Rob Dean at the Stingrays. They've been terrific.''

Um, in regards to the hideous monstrosity that is the above Seatbelt Gurnsey, is this the design?

Sorry, this is disgraceful. Apart from anything, shouldnt the seat belt be buckled??

I applaud the cause, but tampering with a football jumper design is not the way to do this.

This is a disgrace and to sell our souls in an agreement with the AFL meaning we will have to provide and alternate strip next season over something as horrible as this makes me want to vomit

This is an amazing initiative that WILL increase the awareness of the shit that is constantly happening on our roads.

Who gives a f*** if we have to produce a clash strip? Just about every major sporting competition in the world have it, and the AFL have it. We just refused to do it. As long as we only have to wear it for those 'clash' games, who cares. It's not like we are selling out to M&M's like Carlton did.

er a once off desecration of the essendon jumper will make people realise its important to buckle up?

and as to who gives a f*** about a clash strip? I think 138 years of history and tradition says plenty.

Who gives a f***. It's the same blokes out there representing the same club, coached by the same peanut and supported by the same peanuts (present company included).

It's completely moronic to have two teams out there in similar jumpers. If all the tradition and history of the club can be jeopardised by wearing an alternative jumper 3 or 4 times a year, then the club isn't worth shit anyway. Ironically, the more our alternative strip differs from the traditional version, the more the traditional strip will be preserved in my view.

I am surprised you have this opinion Gimps knowing what some of your opinions have been on changes made by our great club in the past have been.

There are many other innovative ways they could promote this important cause. Just like the cancer clash last week we had a small yellow band on our jumpers not a cancerous growth in the middle of our sash!

St Kilda for a start, Carlton, Collingwood, Adelaide...any of the teams with dark coloured tops makes it difficult I reckon.

I agree with this premise.

I think this jumper, or the general discern re: anything other than the traditional jumper, is just an anti AFL thing. In this instance, I think it's actually a worthwhile and simple, clever and effective message.

Whether an actual clash jumper is actually a real necessity due to similarities remains moot.

I'm an EFC member and supporter. The change to a jumper won't change that.

I'm partilally colour blind and never had an issue with jumpers even in the mud and the blood of the old surburban grounds.

Being a staunch traditionalist, I do not want them to f*** around with our jumper. Give an inch on this and before you know it, we will have different jumpers for different occasions.

The whole issue stinks of commercialism and if it it good enough for Collingwood to fight for their history, it is good enough for us. Just because other teams have bent over does not cause a precedent for us.

If we are not playing for the tradition and heritage of our club, what are we playing for. I am rehashing old discussions here but does not our constitution forbid such a change without a massive majority vote from the members.
Too far for Baker now he's on to it, now he’s got it, OPEN GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Dons are in front by one point at the 8 minute mark

Those 2 ******** at AFL House were OUT OF CONTROL anyway with the 3 recent suggestions for next year(Cap Interchanges,3.10PM EST Bouncedowns to lead into TV News Services,Shorter Quarters) to add to their all their other LAMED BRAINED ideas.

This little SNEAK DEAL wouldn't surprise. So Sorry HILLEY.This is NOT an OPTION to consider iif those ARSEHOLES are going to PUT A GUN to our Heads just for 1 game.

BANNER Preffered for a Good cause like this.A BREACH of Constitution which would SPLIT the Club and Suit DEMETRIOU just fine,is JUST NOT ON.

MELBOURNE and SAINTS can NOT Complain on this.If they thought that much of their Guernseys, they would not have SACRIFICED them for the Almighty Dollar. It ain't a problem Boys.We wear WHITE Shorts when you're Home, you wear 'em when you are away.Or get yourselves a COLOUR DIGITAL TELLY.You're about 35 years behind.

Hmm. I think this is a great idea as a once off - a topic near and dear to me - however I would hate to think that this does leave the door open to a clash. Like selling your soul to the devil.

One fr the players to run through, the other to Preserve for our Museum or HILLEY'S Honourable Cause.

NOT THE GUERNSEY.

Unless the Buckle can be re-designed for the Bottom AND without any Compromise with DUMB and DUMBER.

Got away with it with with the YELLOW ARMBANDS,but unless we say to the AFL "NO COMPROMISE!"FORGET IT.

Hmmm - scary to say - but I am with the Gringo on this one. All this crap about selling our souls - turn it up.

Will it stop you being an Essendon supporter - no actually it holds the club up as a leader in the community (cancer awareness, Dreamtime to celebrate indigenous peoples etc) - actually shows that Essendon are LEADERS and INOVATORS in the league! (sorry for the capitals Grassy!!)

The original jumper will be worn for over 90% of our games - should be enough for you to remember what it looks like!

Do I think it'll change the thinking of every person getting into a car? No. Statistically tho it'll cross SOMEONES mind, and if it saves one life, isn't that a start?

It's no different to the campaigns run on TV, and people seem to think they work. I personally can't understand why anyone would get into a car without putting on their seatbelt, but there you go.
