Bombers Drawn G/F 1948

Post by Ronny Rotten »

Just had a discussion with my old uncle , a passionate Bomber supporter , who was at the 1948 drawn grand final against Melbourne.

We kicked an APPALLING 7 goals 27 (yes Twenty Seven) behinds 69 Pts.to Melbourne 10 - 9 - 69.

Apparently we dominated play but could'nt buy a goal. In the dying seconds we were a point up when a Melbourne player (Norm Smith I believe) punched the ball through his own goal from a ball up to level the scores. We had a few injuries & could'nt field our strongest side the folllowing week plus having a psychological let down we lost the replay by 39 points.

My poor old uncle was depressed for weeks after.

However the 40's & early 50's was a golden era for the Bombers. Winning the Premiership in 42 , 46 , 49 , 50 . Runners Up in 41 ,43 , 47 , 48 , 51 , 57 , 59 . Apart from the 48 debacle in 47 we lost when a scum player kicked a goal over his head from the boundary in the dying seconds to put the scum in front & in 51 the great Coleman was suspended for 4 weeks on finals eve resulting him being unable to play in the G/F which we lost to Geelong by 10points.

With a little luck we could / should have won a least 2 more flags in that era. We should remind our current list of the history of our great club & determination & dedication required for them to play in a successful team. Failure is not an option.

As has been mentioned elsewhere, our FF, Bill Brittingham kicked 1:13 or thereabouts and was never let near the forward line again. Makes Cloke sound like half accurate.
Too far for Baker now he's on to it, now he’s got it, OPEN GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Dons are in front by one point at the 8 minute mark

I wonder if SMOKEY DAWSON mentioned BIGGS(DOUG BIGGELOW) on PR today when talking about DRAWN GRAND FINALS?

DOUGIE gave special comments No doubt with AUNTY Radio those days and THAT DAY in '48 would've given him Endless Nightmares. #-o

If we got away the that one, would we have taken up the services of 1 JOHN COLEMAN?

A bit of accuracy called for here folks. Brittingham actually kicked 2.12 in the drawn GF. And we kicked 11.19 to the Scum's 13.8 in 1947. So in consecutive years we have had a total of 64 scoring shots to 40 in Grand Finals and not won either of them. :(
