Traditional-payback threat issued as Krakouer brothers face assault charges

AFL player on assault charge

ABORIGINAL AFL player Andrew Krakouer has been threatened with traditional payback by family members of a man he is charged with assaulting in Fremantle.

The Richmond player, 23, and his brother, Tyrone Krakouer, 21, appeared in the Fremantle Magistrates Court yesterday charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm.

Justin Robin Martin, 24, sustained head injuries in an incident in Fremantle on Friday night. He is in the intensive care unit of Perth's Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

About two dozen police stood guard outside court amid fears of reprisals by more than 20 friends and family of Mr Martin, who is also Aboriginal.

"What goes around comes around … 10 times worse," yelled one woman as the brothers drove away under police escort after their court appearance.

Inside the court, lawyers for the Krakouers said their clients were likely to plead not guilty.

Andrew Krakouer's lawyer, John Prior, asked for his client's next court appearance to be on January 4 because of his footballing duties. "My client Andrew Krakouer is a professional footballer who plays for Richmond and he's due to return to Melbourne now," Mr Prior said.

The brothers will appear in Fremantle Magistrates Court for a committal mention on January 4. Andrew Krakouer was granted bail with $10,000 surety and ordered not to approach Mr Martin.

Mr Martin's grandmother, Theresa Walley, said outside court that there could be traditional Aboriginal payback against the Krakouers.

"If the court doesn't give justice, there will be payback," Ms Walley, who describes herself as a Fremantle Nyoonga elder, said.

"You can't walk out into the street, or go into a pub and have a drink, without a crowd wanting to bash you up." She said Andrew Krakouer and her grandson had been friends who played local football together.

The Krakouers left court via a back entrance, with Andrew driving one car and a police vehicle providing a security escort.

Exactly my sentiments. Yet, this logic isn't common amongst the majority of us men.

I'll just come out and say it. Many of the lesser educated (like some footballers) have failed to evolve from the monkeys, and to this day maintain thier primal instincts to fight for a mate rather than just move on to another more deserving one.

Personally, I find it hard to pick up with a black eye, so the avengence of one is to miss out on many. Not a difficult rational decision me thinks

That's a pretty serious charge to be facing. No wonder he's pleading not guilty! I'd imagine that Krakouer will plead self defence, if indeed he was the one who laid the other guy out.

That family seems to have more than its fair share of bad eggs amongst themselves.

Has the club come out and said anything? Is it likely that they will delist him if he gets convicted? Can't see this doing Richmond's image/sponsorship/membership any favours....

It's an ego thing with men, letting someone else take your chick is like letting another man piss on your leg.

A lot of the time it ends up to do with respect from others, not necessarily 'cause your woman is worth fighting for - she cheats on you, she ISN'T. End of story.

Head injuries... from the blow, or Hookes-style, from the landing? Either way, I hope whoever is guilty of the offence gets what they deserve.

I feel for Martin's family and parter (if he has one?!!?) as I've been there done that at this time of year and it ruins your whole holiday period.

Exactly, robrulz and not only footballers either. You've only got to look at the likes of David Hookes, Rex Hunt and that silly bugger Steve Irwin to see how giant egos can very easily bring a man down. People foolish enough to think they are better than they are because the media turns them into little gods.

I'll probably cop shit over this but just on Irwin, did you catch the latest film that's just been released of him, on his final escapade, (apparently just moments before he 'got it' from the stingray) deliberately stepping (or near enough to it) on a deadly poisonous stone fish just for the sake of the cameras...Mad as a snake that bloke IMO. I think Germaine Greer wasn't too far off the mark when she said the animal kingdom finally got it's revenge ....and now they're trying to turn his kid into another clone of him...Personally I think it's pathetic!
