Draft not so good.

There had been plenty of reports that this year's draft was going to be awesome, perhaps that's not actually the case. But Joe IS that awesome.

Yep...given that Joe Daniher will cost us our first pick, I really don't care if the rest of the draft is completely and utterly crap ![Mr. Green ](./images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif)

Re: Draft not so good.
Geez the AFL keeps finding ways of screwing us. There was a time when a F/S pick required only a third round selection (as Geelong gave up for Gary Ablett). Now, it's our turn and we have to cough up our first round pick. There was also the case in 2007 when we finished with only 4 wins thus qualifying for a compensatory pick and the AFL goes and changes the rule thus denying us the same opportunity that the Scum and others had benefited from on numerous occasions
Re: Draft not so good.
Gary Ablett Jnr was not that highly rated as a Junior about a 3rd round pick is what most clubs would have been willing to part for him, same with Matthew Scarlett. Sure they have turned out to be champion players, but they really weren't rated that highly.
The only father/son they got cheap was Tom Hawkins who was rated a top 3 draft pick that they got with a third rounder.
And up until the finals series last year is was probably one worth about a 3rd round pick anyway.
If you bang on about the AFL screwing us because Geelong got Gary Ablett & Matthew Scarlett cheap then you also need to bang on about how other clubs have been screwed by the fact we were able to get Jobe Watson (who also wasn't particularly highly rated as a junior) as a third rounder.

Jobe was never considered a first round selection. I am pretty sure Gary Ablett jnr would have been
But I take your point

Re: Draft not so good.
The system is fair now that the AFL have fixed it. They haven't gone out of there way to screw us, they are just trying to make the competition more even. We should be thankful that we are getting a top 5 player for our first round pick. It's a steal as it is. It could be worse, we could be an interstate club that doesn't have such a proud and successful history and doesn't have any father son's at all.
If anyone missed "The Hanger" last night it's on the Essendon football club website. There is a great story in the first segment on "The James Hird Academy" and Joe Daniher features. Worth a look.

A lot of people saying he would go top 3.Windy_Hill wrote:Joe was never considered a first round selection.

As Ealsey said Ablett wasn't rated. He was seen as a solid forward pocket potential but that's about it.Windy_Hill wrote:Joe was never considered a first round selection. I am pretty sure Gary Ablett jnr would have been

Shifter Sheehan reckoned a few clubs would be tempted to take him at #1 out of pure talent and upside...robrulz5 wrote:A lot of people saying he would go top 3.Windy_Hill wrote:Joe was never considered a first round selection.

Re: Draft not so good.
Where did you get that idea from...everything I have ever read about him has said that he would have been a very high draft pick...certainly top 5Windy_Hill wrote:Joe was never considered a first round selection.

The league aren't trying to screw us, but I much prefer the old 3rd round pick for all father/son players.

Re: Draft not so good.
If JD is 3-5 than who are the others that fill the top spots?
