Once Terry got his Jaw broken (from an ex Essendon player) i think he or the club changed his roll, became more of a Mr Fix it, first player i reckon who could play almost anywhere on the ground.

Would of been interesting to see how many he would of ended up kicking if he had of stayed a forward.

He was flying in 1979 when he predominantly played at full forward. He had kicked 43 goals after 9 games before having his jaw broken in R10 v South Melbourne. He missed 8 games before returning to kick 14 more goals in 5 matches (including the 1979 Elimination Final where he played with a broken hand).

His career was a mix of attack and defence where he was equally competent at both ends.

And to add to the stats comparison,

After 89 games...

Terry Daniher had kicked 134 behinds
Joe Daniher has kicked 118 behinds

I would suggest that TD had to contend with more challenging conditions - mud heaps, 'windy' hill, Waverley etc as opposed to undercover protection...

Terry Daniher after 93 games:
Age: 24 years, 7 days
Goals: 165
Behinds: 137

Joe Daniher after 93 games:
Age: 23 years, 190 days
Goals: 173
Behinds: 124

Joe just pipped Terry for most goals in a season by a Daniher;

Terry 64 in 1983 from 26 games
Joe 65 in 2017 from 23 games

So he's virtually carryg the team. If we were firing as a team he could bask in the glory. As it is we tend to overlook his contribution every time he has a bad patch.

Great stat. If I am not mistaken Terry started as a Full Forward at South but finished up predominantly down back by the middle and end of his career

Not sure if he started as a full forward at South...but he was a forward though. I remember he was flying as a full forward for us in 1979 before he broke his jaw in R10 v South. I think he almost had 50 goals up to that point. Missed 8 games and finished with 57 for the season.

He became the ultimate switch man where he could shut down the opposition's best forward, or he could switch ends and become our best forward. His endeavour was extraordinary.

Joe’s got a lot more potential to fulfill, before he can come close to Terry.

Just to say g’day to Terry at a Function was good enough for me. :D

Pies fans mightn’t agree, but I bet ya,their players from that era have probably had a beer with him,as he was a Champ on and off the field.Still Is! =D>

Statistically, he’s just ahead of Terry at the same stage of their careers.

It’s a bit different in that Terry was thrown in defence quite a bit throughout his career. Joe may be thrown onto the ball at times too though...

Initially, I did this comparison to check on goal kicking accuracy. I was surprised to see that Joe has a better ratio than Terry. I never thought TD was a poor kick for goal. In fact, I thought the opposite!

I take on board what you’re saying Ben,but a Flag or 2 might help the ultimate comparison to stack up in Joe’s corner.

Sometimes a champion player may never get a premiership. It shouldn’t define them. Ask Bobby Skilton, Robbie Flower etc.

I thought Anthony Daniher was a top full back. One of the best in the comp. Never won a flag. His brother Chris did though...an average player.

In the end though, how do most players rate their careers? With a Flag!

What was it Bobby Skelton said about swapping his 3 Brownlows for a Flag, exactly?

Yes, but it doesn’t mean he wasn’t a champion player. It just means he was unfortunately stuck in a shit team. Imagine if John Coleman played in the 70’s. Would he still be a champion if he never played in premierships? Of course he would be...

I guess I’ll ask...was Chris Daniher a better player than Anthony Daniher? Or for that matter, Neale Daniher?

No,but he still has that Flag. That’s the answer to everything!

As for Terry, catch up Joe!Be good if you do,That means 18 League Flags for us.22 if you want to include 4 others.
