Another one goes in the bin...........Luenberger has announced his retirement.
After being offered another contract by the club. That is a problem in terms of ruck depth in an era when the 2 Ruck line up is back in fashion. Will probably look to the pre-season draft for some mature ruck back up.

Wonder if this was the plan or did he get shoved? Either way, I wonder why it happens now - just after trade period. Surely we would have looked to trade in a ruckman had the club had plans to ditch Luey???

A very honest and frank assessment. But surely we must have guessed all this before now and if so I can't believe we weren't at least speculating a possible ruck replacement during the trade period. Or could it be that his retirement coincides with something we don't know about yet but will pretty soon? Here's hoping.

perhaps the club was hoping he would accept peanuts to go one more year. He may have even been tempted if the price was right. Maybe hejust thought nah, i might just throw in the towel if thats the best they can offer me.

Maybe

He can count his lucky stars that he was even offered another go-round - peanuts or not.

We shouldn't be looking at injury prone dinosaurs. Draft a 205cm kid (easier said than done though)

Draper is on our rookie list: 203cm aged 20
Lavender is on our rookie list: 200cm aged 22

Draper had a good VFL season. Still lots to learn though. Not sure about Lavender. Think he was injured much of the year.

I like what I've seen with Draper. He is a big kid that's only played the game for a couple of years. A British immigrant from recruited from SA who played the round-ball game and a bit of basketball as a kid.
He needs a good ruck coach and a big pre-season to continue building his tank.

He's also not ready at AFL level. He'd be smashed.

Hence offering Leuy another year as a stop gap measure.

If we dont grab a mature age ruck in the PSD/Rookie Draft (is that still happening) then it will be a very long season for Bellchambers and Smack

Jake Long has re-signed to remain at the club for another year. Source AFL News.

If Draper isn't ready for AFL, then neither is this guy. Meanwhile Bags and Dea are still unsigned (though rumor is Bags will go onto the rookie list... surely a joke right?).

Good news.

He is a player that proved his commitment and adaptability in the past season.
Love the blokes who play a role.

To have said ciao to Bags would have been a bad sign.

Same here. Love the blokes who just give everything of themselves to help the team. Even if it means sacrificing their own game or just throwing themselves in harms way just so a teammate can benefit.

I remember when Hardwick was let go. I was gutted. Blokes like him literally bled for the club. You should do everything to keep these guys IMO.

Yes, heard him say that on SEN this evening. Even mentioned Sammy Draper getting games next year. Even said he was very close to getting a game v Port in round 23, but chose Luey instead.

Lot better off exposing young blokes to battle - like Draper - than recycling injury prone dinosaurs (who cant run, jump or mark) like Luey.

Dea delisted today. I think he is stiff considering that Long and McNeice are still on the list.

As mentioned in another thread, I think it’s odd.

Sorry to see Matty Dea go. Will always be thankful to the boys that came on board during the ban year. He is a solid footballer and I can’t recall a game where he got toweled in defence. I guess the truth is there is possibly more upside with McNiece who will now be fighting for a place in a pretty solid back line

Yeah, kinda disappointing - Matty was Mr Dependable really.
But as Windy says, and looking at the rest of the list full of defenders, McNiece probably has more upside. Tough business.
But the comparison with Long is unwarranted, they're not the same sort of players. But, as a 23 year old by the time next season starts, Jake had better start showing a bit more asap. Lucky to stay on the list in my opinion.
