Best 22 2019 - Come on Gimps, let the beast loose

Talk about everything Essendon. Past, Present and Future if it's about the Bombers this is the place to be.

On paper our best 22 is up there with any other team. What concerns me is The next 10-15 players on the list...

We have a bad run with injuries and we’re f***** IMO
This bothers me also. Injuries and it's another season gone. Especially when it's forwards. Reckon we have good defence reserves, but little up forward. Seriously need Begley & Laverde to step up, and find another smaller type.
I think you may be underestimating our depth just a tad. Without Daniher and Fantasia for most of the second half we managed to win 10 out of 14 games.

Not making most people’s starting 22 are the likes of Ambrose, Brown, Begley, Stewart, Colyer, Myers, Ridley, Redman, Mutch, Clarke, McNiece, Hartley all of whom have AFL experience
Fair point about the last 14 rounds. But is it chicken and egg stuff? Maybe being forced to have only 2 talls forward was why we improved later on? We were crap with 3 talls forward, so I don't see more than one of McKernan, Brown or Stewart alongside Daniher. And then there's a big hole of small forwards if Fantasia is missing. The non-starting-22 you mention are almost entirely defenders. I acknowledged we have good depth there, but who are "the depth" in our forward line? There's Begley who is still unproven, as is Laverde, and neither of them are particularly quick or small. Maybe Colyer can become the extra small forward we need?? And we still haven't re-signed Baguley! I acknowledge the last 14 rounds, but I'm still not convinced that line-up can kick winning scores often enough, let alone if one goes down injured. But, as you say, seeing is believing, so if we can win next season with those players I'll have to change my mind I suppose (Shiel will help the situation if we get him).

I agree with this - think our list and depth is very decent.

Looking at the players missing out on the above team, they are in age order from start of next season:

Mark Baguley 31
Matthew Leuenberger 30
Mitch Brown 28
Matt Dea 27
Michael Hartley 25
James Stewart 24
Martin Gleeson 24
Jayden Laverde 22
Matt Guelfi 21
Jordan Ridley 20
Josh Begley 20
Kobe Mutch 20
Jordan Houlahan 20
Brandon Zerk-Thatcher 20
Dylan Clarke 20
Pick 34
Pick 66
Pick 84

There is an argument that most of these could fit into a best 22 - so I see competition for spots extremely healthy.

Not sure if we need to cull anyone else from the list now, but if we do - I'd expect it to be Leuenberger with the elevation of McKernan taking his place on the Senior list (has this already happened ?).

I'd expect that McKernan & Stewart would be fighting for the same position in the forward line with a preference for Stewart if he has sorted out his issues that saw him axed from the team this season.

However the big smokey would not be surprised to see Daniher sharing the load with Belly next season. A fully fit JD roaming the ground would be an extra X Factor that we haven't had since Ryder.

There is a good spread of talls & running players and as we saw this season, Rookies factored in a number of times.

Not getting too ahead however haven't been this bullish about or list for a very long time - just hope that the club has / will be putting as much effort into our coaching & development teams as well.

Joe Daniher is the great unknown. I think its easy to disregard his fantastic 2016 in light of his recent injury induced struggles. He was an All Australian Key Forward with 60+ goals under his belt. If he can return to this sort of output in 2019 then we are a fantastic chance at Finals football. The balancing act remains how you fit JD, Stringer and one of McKernan/Stewart into the line up. I personally favour McKernan as he does provide a realistic supporting ruck option in an era where I suspect 2 ruckman will become de rigeur once again.

Stringer, I believe, had a really good first season and got better as the year went. I do expect him to continue time in the middle as he was just so effective at clearance situations when he did go in the middle. I suspect he will start in the middle on occasion with an instruction to then slip back into the forward line after the clearance is resolved - he simply doesn't have the tank to go with the ball.

I think Walla and Raz fill out the 2 small man position with possible Laverde as the utility Half Forward. Smith, Zaharakis and Parish will probably spend time resting in the half forward position as well as all three are pretty effective goal kickers

Anticipated Starting Forward 6

HF Laverde Daniher McDonald-Tippungwiti
FF Stringer McKernan Fantasia

Out Myers, in Shiel, Zaka to the bench.
Frankly, I was surprised you had Myers in your team...
