Doc Reid operation

Post by s'dreams » Fri Dec 21, 2018 4:33 pm

Bugger of a time to be given the news.

Veteran Essendon doctor diagnosed with cancer

Long-time Essendon club doctor Bruce Reid has been diagnosed with cancer and will be on leave from the club indefinitely.

The Bombers released a statement on Friday explaining that the veteran AFL medico had been diagnosed with mesothelioma.

The club said Dr Reid had undergone surgery and was in hospital recovering.

"Club doctor Bruce Reid will be on leave from the club indefinitely, after being diagnosed with mesothelioma, a form of cancer affecting the mesothelial cells across internal organs," the Bombers said in a statement.

Essendon chief executive Xavier Campbell said the club would do everything possible to support Dr Reid and his family.

"Reidy's health and wellbeing are our number one priority during this difficult time," Campbell said.

The 72-year-old joined Kevin Sheedy at the Bombers in 1982 after spending time as Richmond's club doctor when Sheedy played with the Tigers. He has been a key figure at the club since having played a key role in the club's four premierships under Sheedy.

Reid, who played three AFL games with Hawthorn in the late 1960s, graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 1968.

A loyal Essendon servant, he became embroiled in the club's supplement saga and the subsequent ASADA investigation in 2013 with the AFL charging him, however all charges were eventually dropped and no penalty was applied.

The AFL said at the time they accepted Dr Reid's position after he had made a counter-claim against the AFL Commission in the Supreme Court with Reid declaring his support for the AFL's determination to implement good governance processes that saw the club doctor remain the key figure in managing the health, welfare and safety of the players.

Reid continued work with Essendon in 2014 and has been with the Bombers ever since.

Get well Reidy ... Sucks that the media bring up 2012/2013 every time.
