ESSENDON Anniversary Reflections - 1949 PREMIERS

Post by grassy1 » Sat Jan 12, 2019 6:17 am

Time for a Salute to this team, having Lost the previous 2 Flags in agonising fashion, after a Magnificent Flag in 1946.

We know who stepped on our door after the dreadfull 7.27 in The Drawn Grand Final and subsequent loss in the replay, after losing Wally Buttsworth through a most untimely injury.

Better historians than me,can depict how low we got in 1949,making a quest for a Flag seem very remote. Were we at 5 - 5 or 5 - 6,after Coleman’s Brilliant Debut?

We sunk to 5 - 6 during the season, our lowest ebb after getting Thumped by the Cats at Kardinya Park by 95 points. We started the season with a Bang, going 3 - 0,with a skinny kid called John Coleman kicking a Goal with his 1st kick in the opening seconds of the game, before finishing with an incredible 12 for his Debut.A Star was born, with Superstardom on the way.

We then went 2 - 6 over an 8 week period, which culminated in the thrashing dished out to us,by Geelong.

Having Hawthorn the week after, got things going again, with a 70 point Win.It may have been more,if Hawthorn was a spec inaccurate, having kicked 7.0 against our generally miserly defence that day.
