Best 22 in 2020

Well - where are they?

PS - Cutler and Phillips probably aren't best 22. The "New recruits" Daniher, Draper, Mutch, Smith, Stewart and to some extent Fantasia and BZT may be pushing for spots though.

Face value appears decent.
But I think it's more complicated - as in....best 22 depends who we're playing against.
That said...
I'd have Brown rather than McKernan. I feel he offers more in the way of workrate and connection between mids and forwards.
Not sure Draper is best 22 yet. He's still untried at AFL level.
And I really reckon Snelling should be in there. Maybe as Interchange rather than Gleeson. Thinking we are well covered enough defensively without Gleeson.

That is some team, on paper at least!!
Happy with Smack rather than Brown. He is more versatile and has some real mongrel in him Although a good kick, Brown is one dimensional and easily pushed off the ball. Once it hits the deck, he is out of the competition. If players played to their potential, I cannot see a weakness, but that is a big if. !!
Too far for Baker now he's on to it, now he’s got it, OPEN GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Dons are in front by one point at the 8 minute mark

Snelling for Cutler - that way he would be playing each week either replacing Smith or Fanta /s

Also Woosha has a love of Guelfi who seem to spend a lot of time running up and down the ground (and if he isnt playing Begley is playing the same role).

Francis to permanently slot into the back 6 at Hookers expense.

If we're playing McKernan and / or Brown - we are a weaker side. I'd start with Hooker deep with a fit Daniher as they worked well together in the past.

Cutler will be in starting 22 as they will have him slotting into midfield as a big bodied mid who has versatility to play elsewhere.

Draper IF he recovers from knee successfully - but needs at least 12 full months to recover so really wouldn't expect to see him until at least mid season. Be hoping that Phillips can cement himself as come the back half of the season we will need 2 ruckman who have ability to drift forward for a couple goals between them - complete unknown and still a massive concern area.

Last 2 spots on the bench are a lottery as to who could fill those.

Regardless of what everyone thinks - Worsfold will have Zaharakis in starting 22 !

This is pretty much how I would line up. Cale forward seems to make sense but I really fear he is cooked.

Hooker didn't finish the season well did he. He really needs an injury free pre season to enjoy a good 2020.

I do like the idea of Francis taking his role because that is the future. With that covered Hooker can really cause some damage up forward and if JD fires then the alternative talls can be effective targets.

Stewart is one that needs to show or go too. He can do good stuff but I have never perceived him as a smart footballer. JD isn't particularly smart either but his talent is exceptional. Imagine him if he's smart & skilled! I think JD has lived off his talent from an early age and has always been successful but his injuries have been difficult to cope with. (not quite the Tom Boyd scenario where he said he didn't have the personal skills to cope with adversity due to having lead a charmed childhood)

The ideal tall forward pairing is fit JD & Hooker, Smack if one is out, then Brown then Stewart unless pre-season form &/or injuries impact any of them.

Add Walla, Stringer, Fanta, Smith and there should be gen-u-whine excitement. Stringer as the 3rd big forward will be exceptionally dangerous.

Now if Hepp/Zerret/Shiel can collectively improve their delivery.... :-k

McK & Saad are locks. Cutler, Ridley, Gleeson, Redman might be looking at the same spot.

Ridley is one that needs a shot, otherwise he might look elsewhere? It'd be a shame if he went because he is a lovely kick and plays the intercept role well. Now if he had Cutlers physique.... :-k

TBC will be #1 ruck. He's another that needs an injury free pre-season otherwise Draper needs a run as soon as able.

Begs the question.

JD CHF or FF?

I see Hooker better at FF, less mobile than JD.

Although both are excellent off Half Back is it time to start looking at one of McKenna or Saad as a midfielder? Mature bodies and good pace would be handy. We also seem to have enough depth to cover one of them if they move up the ground - Cutler being another addition to the HB type.

I would love to see McKenna getting more of the pill and using his pace now he has had time to learn the game. Full pre season building his tank and then get him into the middle. Wants to be a forward and loves a goal.

Thoughts??

Because of the somewhat "kamikaze" style that they run in, if they were further up the ground I'd have my worries that they'd run themselves out of options to give the ball to. Like, they'd stuff anyone's leading pattern, and possibly run past our forwards that had come up the ground to defend.
I think they're better to break defensive lines, with almost the whole field in front of them, which helps making a turnover transition to scoring opportunities more quickly.

I think both are excellent kicks on the burst - especially Saad. Saad proved how good he was in the final when having a crack at goal. McKenna has proven that he is a good kick for goal on the run also. I think it would be worthwhile giving them a crack on the wing from time to time.
