Bombers assistant quits, set to join Collingwood
Daniel Cherny
By Daniel Cherny
November 11, 2019 — 3.15pm

Essendon assistant coach Hayden Skipworth is poised to join Collingwood, informing the Bombers of his resignation on Monday - the first day of Bombers' pre-season training.

Former Essendon and Adelaide player Skipworth, who has been at the Dons for a decade in a variety of roles, will head to the Pies to take up a role heading the club's academy.

Skipworth, 36, is likely to replace Tarkyn Lockyer, who is leaving the Holden Centre to replace Luke Power as head of the AFL academy. Brisbane Lions champion Power joined Carlton's coaching staff earlier this year.

Skipworth's decision leaves the Dons down a key assistant coach late in the piece. Skipworth had been responsible for the Essendon midfield in 2019 but had been poised to return to the forward division, an area he had previously overseen.

The Bombers have however gained highly-rated Richmond assistant Blake Caracella, and top VAFA coach Cam Roberts, who also has experience at AFL NT.

South Australian Roberts, who played 11 games for Geelong in the late 90s, had been coach of Uni Blacks until this year, leading the club to premiership glory in Premier A division in 2014.

Skipworth's departure comes almost two months after the coaching handover between Ben Rutten

Did any volunteers with 25 years service get Life Membership at Essendon lately?

No, but they've been offered heavily discounted psychology services.

He's probably tried his best, and done some good things. And I wish him well for the future.
But I'm not unhappy to see him go. Actually I'm glad he's going.
I've said for a long while that our Assistant coaches weren't up to it, and now 3 have gone. Yayyy.
Things are looking up.

You're correct - looking after their Academy (currently Hocking's role with us) is equivalent to coaching and strategising the forward line.

Duh. Next time don't be a dickhead and actually read the articles before you post them.

Here's another quote for you not to read:

“Although it is sad to see Hayden leave, it is a great opportunity for him at Collingwood in a more senior role."

It's nice that some people actually believe the EFC media unit... long experience has trained me to be a bit more questioning about the messaging.

As for being a dickhead, its hard enough supporting this team over a long haul without copping it from within... oh well, c'est la vie

As for the appointment, perhaps checking out the opposition's release may also be of assistance:
Skipworth joins the Pies

Skipworth comes across to the Magpies with 11 years under his belt at Essendon - Collingwood Magpies

Collingwood has appointed Hayden Skipworth as head of academy for the 2020 season, replacing the outgoing Tarkyn Lockyer.

Former Essendon and Adelaide player, Skipworth comes to the Pies with a plethora of experience through holding various coaching roles at the Dons, including development coach, VFL coach, and most recently assistant coach.

Skipworth debuted with Adelaide in 2001, before finishing his career at Essendon on 55 games.

Collingwood GM Football Geoff Walsh said having someone of Skipworth’s expertise will greatly benefit the club.

“We are so pleased to be able to bring someone of Hayden’s experience into our program and will be a significant acquisition and contributor to the academy program,” Walsh said.

Skipworth will officially commence his role on Monday 18 November.

Head of Academy > Assistant coach.

Go ask any person who is in the industry. Got zero to do with believing the club.
