2024 Round 2, EFC vs Syd-in-eeeee
Re: 2024 Round 2, EFC vs Syd-in-eeeee
You know you are in for a drubbing when Stringer plays about 25 minutes of football and tries to do a couple of hail mary attempts.
I don't care he got 3 goals, he coasted most of the night, had 6 clangers from 14 touches... and got most of his goals in junk time.
Sadly, some players were worse.
Kicking and handball accuracy was woeful and was below 80% for all but 5 players - Merrett, McGrath, Heppell, Wright and Laverde.
We are a team of ball butchers.

I saw things a bit differently. The defence isn’t what it should be without the likes of the Riddler, Red Dog and even Kells. The solidness missing of that trio does makes us vulnerable. Throw in Doc Reid as well, and we are missing a fair chunk of our defensive capabilities.
I was stirringly surprised that we planted them in the first half. It was good to see an attack on the contest and ball that shucked them a little.
Good ol’ skip led from the front. Such a consistent performer. Had a ripping last quarter and did his darndest to drag us closer.
Gresho had a red hot dip. Adds plenty of crust. Nico Marto also busy on the night.
It fell away a bit after half time, but it can be put down to a defence under manned and under pressure. Some easy entries and easy marks for them i50 were telling. Lick to the chop as they say.
We simply can’t afford losing key players in our arcs. We have quite a number that can be replaced in the middle, but key players up forward and back are our Achilles heel.

I thought we were okay for 90% of the game and at least had a dip.
It's the 10% of the game when we're terrible that really lets us down, with all those old problems we've all been complaining about for years and years rearing their ugly heads again - fumbling, kicking straight to the opposition, failing to defend in transition, etc etc
If only we could iron out those issues - but we never seem to make any progress on them at all.

Interesting fact 1: Sydney scored 71 points of their final 131 point score in "red time" - the last 5 minutes of each quarter.
When they scored on the siren in the 3rd quarter, you just knew it was heartbreak.
You can talk all you want about "defending in transition", but IMO defending 100% of the quarter is perhaps more important.
Interesting fact 2: Their midfield worked harder. Despite our team winning the clearances and the stoppages.
They had 4 players who sprinted more than 2.5KM at full speed. McInerney (3.3KM), Warner (2.6), Guilden (2.6) and Heeney (2.5)
We had 2: Martin (2.7) and Hind (2.5)
All the above got over 20 possessions at over 78% accuracy except for Hind (10 possessions at 60%).
We need to learn to run and kick!
I also think that Durham is a bit under appreciated. He (and Gresham) are the revelations of the very young season.

And 2MP will go straight to the Trib.
He will go under the new Maynard rule. He may have got off last year.
3 weeks minimum.

Wright direct to the tribunal.
Re: 2024 Round 2, EFC vs Syd-in-eeeee
He will be the test case for the new rule... as well as a warning to everyone else.
Even though it was a split second decision to protect himself rather than make an unrealistic attempt to mark.

Re: 2024 Round 2, EFC vs Syd-in-eeeee
Simple questions…
Why hasn’t Wright got the right to run and jump to mark the ball… and make a last second decision to brace for impact?
and
Why isn’t Cunningham just as “careless” in his attempt to get to the ball?
The game is hijacked by ******** wearing wigs, trying to blame someone for accidental contact with the head.
Yet, they don’t bother citing a player (Heeney) for carelessly swinging his arm back and making contact with his opponents head.

The same tranche of pundits that spewed out ad infinitum about Maynard “what else could he do?” have turned into hanging judges on Peter Wright.
If you look at both incidents in normal motion , if you say Maynard had no other choice and had to brace you also must conclude that Wright had 1/100 the time.
If Maynard gets off , Wright MUST get off.
Maynard propelling himself forward into Brayshaws head and had full visibility on him. Wright only feels the awareness Cunningham coming from side in the last nano second and braces for impact.

Maynard attempted to Smother and had NO WAY of changing direction! His human movement witnesses had proof of that and that AWFUL Mob had Nowhere to Go,FINITO!MH_Bomber wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2024 8:11 pm The same tranche of pundits that spewed out ad infinitum about Maynard “what else could he do?” have turned into hanging judges on Peter Wright.
Maynard's Tribunal Reps had the AFL over a Barrell the way the Rules were framed and Maynard's actions took place. The AFL wanted to Nail him for it,but had nowhere to go.
That's what happens when you fiddle with the Rules all too often, overlook something and realise too late,THEY f***** UP!
And that's before Pete's Incident.Saw it!A few times,.....Looked a bit worse than Maynard's sorry.Hope the Club at least doesn't throw in towel this time and get it down to 1,but I haven't caught the latest on that.

Neither Maynard or Wright should be suspended.
Any reasoning to suggest otherwise is pure poppycock IMO

It's exactly because Maynard got off that Wright got suspended. They changed the rules this year because of the Maynard case.MH_Bomber wrote: ↑Mon Mar 25, 2024 8:11 pm The same tranche of pundits that spewed out ad infinitum about Maynard “what else could he do?” have turned into hanging judges on Peter Wright.

On a separate note ... the pile on this week from the media was unedifying ... including Leigh Matthews coming out and saying players who cause concussion should be sin binned for the rest of the game ...
Neville Bruns says "Hi Leigh". Or he would if he could remember the king hit off the ball that broke his jaw. Yet Matthews did not get a single match in suspension (which resulted in the police getting involved). Bruns for being king hit copped abuse from Hawks fans for years afterwards including being booed at matched and abusive and getting threatening letters and phone calls. Bruns kept a whistle by the phone for years... Yet not a solitary word of apology or contrition from Matthews in the nearly 40 years since the thug hit.
