AFL suspends Essendon runner

News
THE AFL today announced that it had suspended Essendon runner Paul Dimattina for four matches over an incident involving Field Umpire Stefan Grun during Essendon Football Club’s round 12 game against Port Adelaide.

It also announced that Essendon would not be able to use a replacement runner for the duration of Dimattina’s four-match suspension.

Dimattina was ruled to be in breach of Regulation 13.12A during an incident at the 23-minute mark of the second quarter of the game at AAMI Stadium when field umpire Grun said he was verbally abused over a decision. The comment resulted in a free kick awarded against the runner.

The incident was the second breach of Regulation 13.12A involving Paul Dimattina. In 2006 he also received a $5000 sanction and was suspended for two matches. The round 12 incident was the fifth offence involving an Essendon runner since 2003.

AFL General Manager Football Operations Adrian Anderson said the role of the runner was to deliver messages to players and get off the ground as soon as possible and did not involve any discussion with opposition players or umpires.

I agree. This sort of crap is going on far too much. Not really well, but I remember Wayne Jackson as CEO. I don't remember crap like this going on when he was in charge.

Surely something can be done.

I know. Let's get the big 3 - Essendon, Carlton and Collingwood together (and add to the mix Sydney and West Coast) threaten to leave and start their own league. Something has to be done - does it have to come to something as drastic as that before someone in AFL house realises they're doing the wrong thing and that footy is beginning to lose people?

Personally I don`t have a problem with the AFL in this situation.

Dimma`s an idiot for talking to the umpire. Given the severity of the sentence he has cost us I`m not sure we need him back.

I have no idea what Dimma said, but nor do I care.
He should not be saying anything to umpires, full stop, and the fact he was penalised last year should have been enough to learn his lesson.
We don't need poor discipline from players, and nor do we need it from anyone else around the club.
He should go.

I agree with this also. He is a representative of the EFC and he should conduct himself in a manner not detrimental to the team.

Most everyone here blasted McVeigh when he used to mouth off, well what's the difference here? Dimma mouthed off, gave away a free kick and finds himself suspended.

At least McVeigh displays match winning performances....

it's not about his discipline, i agree he doesn't need to say anything to umpires but it's more about the ridiculous outcome in this case...

He should shut his mouth but 4 weeks is a joke not to mention that we are also made to be a runner down for the period!!!

I dont think the EFC gave him instruction to wouth off so why should the EFC be penalised??

No logic at all behind leaving us a runner down for a month. A severe disadvantage for quick match ups.

If a player i suspended he can be replaced. Why the difference here?

So telling the truth gets him a suspension...

should have phrased it more cleverly:

"Hey umpy, can I be penalised for my thoughts?"

"No, of course not!"

"Great. I think you're a dumb c***."

Guaranteed Garry Lyon will get on his high horse tonight on FC, and bleat about this incident. He has been on a campaign for weeks, and particularly highlighting our runners being a blight on the game. Just watch.....

I wouldn't be surprised if he is somehow behind the crackdown.
