Ayres hand up for Saints job

Post by chickster »

Based on our defensive efforts this year, would we miss him? And would they want him?

Can hardly blame him or the backline for the way the ball was coming in all the time, nothing he or they could do most of the time.

Plus we were the 6th highest for inside 50's and had as much or more scoring shots than our oposition in most games this year. Our set shot kicking for goal was poor. So with this stupid play on immediately from a kick in, everytime we kicked a point (often), it was up the other end in a flash. This is not Ayres & Fletch & cos fault.

Blame the players up the ground for not manning up or creating a defensive mid field wall, not the backline.

I don't think we'd miss him at all.
Why would St Kilda want him, though?
We wasn't really successful either at Geelong or Adelaide was he?

Played off in 97 (?) and also a better win/loss ration than most coaches going around atm. I dunno.

I think Ayres has had a bad rap. He got a Geelong list in decline and was robbed by umpires (Colberts mark not paid) and a dud finals draw (finished top in 1997, lost 1st final and had to go to SA to play the Crows).

He was the guy who got most of the Crows list. He copped heaps for playing McLeod on a HBF and now he is a AA HBF.

He could do it easily.

Irrespective of Ayres' credentials (of which i'm not convinced), i think the Saints will go for a fresh face. Longmire or Pyke should be favourites.

Also, Mark Harvey isn't out of the question. I've got no doubt he went to Freo with the understanding that, if Freo had another mediocre season, Connolly would get the arse and Harvey was pretty much guaranteed the head coach position if this occurred; why else would you relocate across the country to go to an inferior club for a job that was the same as the one he already had? By about Round 10 this year, Harvs would've been counting his chickens already, but now the Dockers are likely to make a preliminary final and Connolly isn't going to get sacked. Harvey now knows that the head coach position at Freo isn't really an option, and given the fact he's been keen on getting a head coach position for at least 4 or 5 years now, it wouldn't surprise me if he pressed his case for the Saints' job.

That is a very big call, so big that we should run a book on it. what are the odds of Ken Sheldon being the next St Kilda coach ??? 30's plus ?

Well, Ayres would be an improvement over Thomas, but really, that ain't saying much.

they have no hope in hell of getting any of the big 4.

Maybe they will approach Thompson but my money would be on Longmire, Harvey or ODonnell

I think G'Od has his eyes on the bigger picture after next year.
3 : 17.34 {rFP} - Tries to use Blidge - eventually does.
3 : 17.36 {rFP} - He has a shot from nowhere.
3 : 17.4 {rFP} - Goooooooooooaaaaaaaaallll.

4 : 12.31 {rFP} - With the ball is Blidge.
4 : 12.36 {rFP} - Blidge has a shot from nowhere.
4 : 12.39 {rFP} - Fantastic goal from Blidge.

By that do you mean moving into more of a management role?

I thought that he had decided against coaching and was looking at getting into club management.

Reckon Mark Harvey will get it.

No reason, just a gut feeling. ;)
