Retire the number. I don't get why we do not retire numbers. I think it would be great to have retired numbers.

hirdy took it straight from TD, who was an out and out champion.

You think it has to be retired??

It'll be rested for a year or maybe two - then given to a good young kid.

I don't believe in retiring numbers. If we haven't retired Reynolds / Hutchinson / Coleman / Watson / Madden 's numbers, then why should we retire Hird's number?

I think it should be retired for 1 year. Evaluate over the next year who will best continue the #5 legacy and then bring it back in 2009.

Either that or let Sir James decide who gets his number. I reckon he'd be pretty good at judging who should get it.

I reckon it'd be great if Winderlich got it. He idolises Sir James and I reckon he'd bust a gut to live up to the legacy that is James Hird and #5.

Sure it will be started late, but a tradition has to start some where.

If we retire 5 then we should retire 3, 10, 27 etc etc. All or nothing.

i felt the same way when hirdy took on TD's number(who was my fav player as a little tacker).

then well, he went onto be sir james.

i'd like to see it go to a f/s pick, thats just me.

i'd certainly like to see young darcy avoid was it 9?

(praying he is more like one of his uncles rather than his old man)

I wont be arguing that. Retire the numbers of the players you mentioned.
Reynolds, Hutchinson, Coleman, Watson, Madden and Hird.

Gee, you're putting a lot of value on Henneman and Alessio aren't you?

I like what St Kilda did, allow Hirdy to hand it over to someone he likes the look of.

Retired numbers...never lasts. Hawthorn were going to retire their number 5 after Peter Crimmins died...didn't last. Harford had it , now Mitchell's got it. There may have been others, but certainly they are 2 that I can think of.
