I would still argue best to let it rest for a year and see who has really proved himself worthy.

Who wore the number 5 before TD & Hirdy?
I have a vague memory from my childhood of a Gary Parkes wearing it, playing on the wing, but not sure.

I think it was in fact Gary Parkes. Don't remember anyone else between Parkes & Daniher wearing it.

Strangely, neither do I, and yet there must have been a gap of quite a few years in between Parkes & TD. I reckon Parkes probably retired in about 1975 and TD didn't arrive until about 1979. So was the number dormant for a few seasons?

I would give number 5 to Paddy if he wanted it.

He just looks like a player that is going to be a champion of the club. It might put some pressure on him but no more pressure than Jim was under when he took it over from TD.

I do have a vague memory of Gary Crouch. Played 1969-70. I think on a wing.

Gary Parkes was not a bad player. Went to Richmond after us. Wore our No.5 1970-76.

TD came in 1978, so that still leaves 1977 as a gap year. Was the jumper rested or did someone have it and never played a senior game? I can't remember. It was the year of the "Baby Bombers". Maybe some young guy who never ended up making it??

The No.5 stocks have certainly been on the rise in recent times. Not much on offer other than Hird, Daniher and Shaw.

I think, given the number's now talismanic appeal, should be held back until the next recipient is obvious. By that I mean a player who represents the same leadership, courage and inspiration of the last 2 players to wear this number.

I too have 5 on my jumper with the old speed kills logo, I too am retiring it...

Yet to decide whose number I'll pick next.

As far as who deserves to wear the number 5? I suppose we'll find out just before next season, tho I do hope Hirdy is allowed to be heavily involved in choosing. He may well pick Winder.

I hope Hirdy chooses it, and the player who gets it goes on to the same dizzying heights as Hird did.

Ryder, Hislop, Winderlich and Gumbleton would all be good choices.

Ryder would be my first choice.

Although Licha look like he may well be on the verge.

McVeigh has also demonstrated this year they he may also be worthy.

I think it should be left to Hird to decide. Give it a one year rest, then get him back to the club to pass it on to someone who he thinks deserves it, similar to Bewick giving the #8 top to Winderlich.

I think resting it might be a good idea, but ultimately I would like to see Hislop get it. Will have it long enough to give it back to Hird when he retires.

Hope Winder doesn't get it. I got a #8 jumper before the start of this season, and he did receive it from Boris (who coached him) so I don't think that will happen.

Will be an interesting one though. Talk about pressure on whoever gets it. :p

It definately shouldn't be Hird's decision. Too much pressure on the player. That's the reason why numbers are not often passed on directly by the player retiring. Terry Daniher didn't select Hird to wear 5, it was done independently by the club.

It should be held over for a year or two and then given to someone who the club sees fit. Not a first year player, someone who has been on the list for 1-2 years.

Can I ask why people think Winderlich deserves the #5 top? So far in 6 years of footy, he has had 1 and a half good seasons.

He's just starting to find his feet, some people develop slower than others. He is still a young kid. He has speed, skills and determination. Had a bloody good year Definetley in our top 5 players this year. Wouldn't be as hasty and give him the no 5 top straight away, but he looks like he could be a top candidate
