Farewell Mark Johnson

Post by BenDoolan »

I'm feel a bit gutted for the bloke. Great servant of our footy club. Gave everything of himself for the red & black. Loved the way he played the game, and it's a shame he didn't make 200 games. His job on Farmer in the 2000 GF was fantastic - considering Farmer had kicked 8 goals the week before. Best & Fairest winner in 2002, and unlucky not to win another one in 2005. Players like Johnno are like gold nuggets - very rare. All the best for the future champ, and thanks for many times you put your body on the line for this club.

I just made the same comment about his role in the 2000 GF on Farmer.

I am surprised he couldnt get another season.

Seconded. Not happy about this decision, but at the same time can understand it. He's the sort of guy who will rip us a new one each and every time we play now... at 28 I hope he gets a new club. It'll be difficult for him.

Most hated Essendon player to most opposition supporters... shows he has a little niggle in him!

Probably was next to be pushed if need be, but has survived.

Well summed up BD. Like JJ, i think their last 2-3 years have somewhat tarnished our memories of how good these guys were in their pomp in the late 90's and early 00's. MJ was an excellent player who typified our dominating and aggressive style of play in our Premiership year, who did it the hard way off the rookie list.

I wish him well in all future endeavours.

Real sad to see him go, but sort of expected it.

Even though his past few years were not the best, he played the tough, accountable, selfless, body on the line football that has been missing from this club in the recent past.

The last of the "tough guys" who delivered in 2000, alongside Wallis, Solomon, Bewick and Barnard among others.

Wish him all the success in the future.

I loved how he did his shoulder in the QF and Prelim finals, then somehow hurt his ribs, yet come GF time he f****** ate farmer for breakfast. In fact he didnt eat him, he chewed him up and spat him out.

Undeniably an excellent servant of the club.

Tough and in your face, but the game is catching up to fast.

The correct call imho, and I hope the future is good to him.

Congrats to a real Essendon man.

Not so many great games in the last year, but a battler all the same.

Well said BD. I am just reeling with the punches as the old firm slowly disintigrates. I know it had to be done, but losing Johnno was nearly the final straw.

We face the new season with a new coach, a new look and almost a new team.

I am feeling positive (I think)

God help us!!!!
Too far for Baker now he's on to it, now he’s got it, OPEN GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Dons are in front by one point at the 8 minute mark

Poor bastard. I loved MJ, but unfortunately he just isn't up to it anymore. He's driven his body into the ground for us for so long now, and I will forever be grateful for that.

When players like MJ are let go it does leave a hollow feeling.

I can understand the decision but it is a shame he goes out this way.

The part of silly season that sucks really.

With this decision I dare say we should prepare to farewell his namesake at the end of next years season.

I have to echo BD's comments. Extremely disappointed to lose a stalwart of the club like MJ. At the same time, I understand the decision, but I hope he is picked up to play in 2008. The bloke deserves to at least get to the 200 Club. He put his body on the line constantly, and along with blokes like Hardwick, Wallis, Solomon, JJ and co, was the epitome of toughness in football in our reign at the top of the heap.

Good luck for 2008 and beyond.
