Who is our best?

Talk about everything Essendon. Past, Present and Future if it's about the Bombers this is the place to be.

Who is our best?

Post by merc_2 »

With Lloyd so badly out of form the other night and with Hird now retired, it got me thinking who is our best player.
This is my top 3.
Would be interested in other opinions.
1 Mark McVeigh
2 David Hille
3 Patrick Ryder

With Dustin Fletcher and Brent Stanton right up there.

1. Fletcher- Has been our most important player for years.
2. Lucas
3. McVeigh

In 2-3 years time.

1. Ryder
2. Houli
3. Could come from Stanton, Pears, Daniher and a few others.

Stanton has done very little that could be called honourable this year.

Poor ol' Davey. Does a hell of a lot of hard work and doesn't get the recognition. The best chaser at the club. A ferocious tackler, and a determined 2nd, 3rd and even a 4th effort performer. The king of 1 percenters is also quite skilful and kicks inspirational goals. Brings others into the game with his magnificent defensive pressure.

Wow. How much expectation is there on Stanton, is it the jumper or what? I've been to many games this year and in every he has played very well, not awesome, but he has kicked crucial goals and won some ball for us a lot in those games. In relaltion to your question:

1.Mark McVeigh
2. David Hille is a star
3. Patrick Ryder
4. Bachar Houli (cant leave him out)

Alwyn is right up there, but not quite in our top 3.
Stanton is one of the only decent midfielders we have, he has been starring this year, but is always amongst our best.

There it is.

I have absolutely no idea how anyone could not even have him in the top 3. Must've been watching a different Essendon Bombers side to me for the last decade or so.

Definitely our best player now. Previously there could have been some debate....with Hirdy running around being Hirdy, and Lloyd at full flight....but there's no question now.

At the moment I'll go with:
1) Fletcher
2) Lucas
3) Lloyd
4) McVeigh
5) Ryder
6) Davey

With Lloyd at full flight Fletcher won a best & fairest.

I haven't got the stats available but I'm pretty sure that if I did, it would show that when Fletch misses, our winning percentage is awful. We have always been able to cover (to a certain extent) when Lloyd, Lucas (and even Hirdy) went down but Fletch was and is another matter.

He's our most important player imo.

Indeed. Very unluck not to win his 2nd B&F last year.

Fair enough ive only seen 2 games this year, but for people to have Houli as our top 3 players at the whole club after one or two good matches is a good laugh.

Our top 3 are still:
Fletcher
Lucas
Lloyd

His been honourable the last two weeks. 20+ touches, and 2 or more goals. Thats what you want from an ideal attacking midfielder

remember when McPhee had such an awesome season?

(what was it a year after getting him from fremantle?.....)

I wonder what ever happened since.

continual let down ever since those lofty heights.

OP, inconsistency, poor form and high expectation to fullfil KP roles when our big 'uns have been out injured or that period of time. Personally, I think he's played very well this year with the occasional clanger for which he gets crucified.

Agree with you on this one BD...I've struggled to understand the level of criticism he has received this year.

Yeah he has played OK in the last couple of weeks but I am sick of him being soft.... Anyone who wears the number 5 is not allowed to be soft

when fit...

3. Scotty
2. Fletch
1. Spike

are irrefutably our 3 best and most important players.

The only young bloke I think who is approaching these guys is Paddy - composed, quick, skilled, determined - playing beyond his years.

From some of the others mentioned:

Lloyd has been, and may return to star-status - but I fear he is on the slide.
Houli has been good the last couple - but went missing the couple before that.
Similarly, Stants has had 2 ok games - but 3 pretty ordinary ones.
McPhee has been serviceable this year - and the criticism has been a bit harsh (fully justified in last two seasons though).
Davey is a role model for how we should attack the ball and the man around the ground.
Hille - very good at his best - but has a lot of "do nothing" quarters.
Lovett is important - when switched on - he can burn.
