Been thinking the same thing

Makes me think it is more serious than what we are being told

Even if they were going to be extra cautious with his history I woulda thought 6 or 7 weeks would have that covered??

After his issues last year, they were going to give him a few extra weeks after he had recovered. The time was to be spent focusing on strengthening the hamstring.

I think it's time the Board invest in setting up a Soft Tissue Recovery Centre of Excellence at the Windy Hill precinct.

They would only need an entrance - no exit signs required.

I'm not sure - but I thought I heard he re-injured it about 5 weeks into rehab?

No I'm not bull-shitting - but I do have a poor memory - perhaps I've just dreamt it.

This was on Real Footy on 1 April so you would expect that he wouldnt be to far away. Maybe Calthorpe was playing an April Fools gag.

Bomber escapes with strain
Peter Hanlon | April 1, 2008

WHEN Essendon's exciting but soft-tissue-tortured wingman Courtenay Dempsey clutched his leg after diving for a mark seconds before half-time on Sunday, club doctor Bruce Reid immediately voiced two possibilities — cramp or hamstring.

The more worrying scenario was duly confirmed, but with it came better news.

Dempsey injured his left hamstring four times last season, squeezing in only one senior game, but Sunday's mishap befell his other leg, and is a strain rather than a tear.

"This is only a very, very minor setback for him," team manager David Calthorpe said yesterday.

"He'll miss two to three weeks."

Calthorpe said 19-year-old centre half-forward Scott Gumbleton, who is the obvious replacement for the injured Scott Lucas, was "pretty much ready to go" as far as his running was concerned.

However, he would be held back to avoid a recurrence of his hamstring troubles.

Coach Matthew Knights indicated on Sunday night it would be another month before Gumbleton was playing, which would amount to about 10 weeks out of the game.

"He's had scans today, to make sure everything's healed in the tendon," Calthorpe said of Gumbleton.

"We're taking a conservative approach to build up the strength around the hamstring and lower back."

Someone on here was speculating it I think but it was pretty quickly corrected

Who knows what is going on all I know is that it is a ridiculously long time for a hammy injury

As the Don posted, from what I understand, he is back in full training, and is fully fit, but they are focusing on strengthening his back and hamstrings (it was a back related injury) so that it doesn't happen within two weeks of him playing again.

Gumbleton is supposed to be playing for Bendigo this week isnt he? Dempsey was also going to play in the 2's this week but obviously the club didint want to risk him.

Over the next 3 weeks we should get Gumbleton, Jetta, Dempsey and Lonergan back. McVeigh would be close after that and that leaves Hocking, Lucas and Davey as the long term injuries.

Gmby will be playing reserves til the mid-season break I reckon.

If Jetta and Dempsey dont come in, it shows a lack of confidence in our conditioning, in which changes must be made to training techniques and personel. Hamstrings should not be taking 5 weeks to heal.

After the port game, there is a weeks break, so maybe McVeigh and Lonergan may play a half for Bendigo, but will be back in for the Sydney game.
