James Hird an outside mid? He was the most inside midfielder we've had at the club for years...
Best Tall Defender
Dustin Fletcher

Best Small Defender
Gavin Wanaganeen

Best Inside Midfielder
Gary Ablett Jnr

Best Outside Midfielder
Michael Long

Best Tall Forward
Wayne Carey

Best Small Forward
Gary Ablett Snr - he's actually shorter than Jarman

Best Ruck
Simon Madden

Best Wildcard (One other player who you couldnt place in the above categroies)
James Hird (what was his position?)
There you go, I'm very biased!

James Hird - how can you limit such an awesome all-rounder to one category!

Best Tall Defender
Glenn Jakovich

Best Small Defender
Glenn Archer

Best Inside Midfielder
Greg Williams

Best Outside Midfielder
Peter Matera

Best Tall Forward
Wayne Carey

Best Small Forward
James Hird

Best Ruck
Dean Cox - unfortunately for Madden he only played the first few years of the list. Jim Stynes took the running throughout the 1990's and Cox has been awesome since 2000.

Best Wildcard (One other player who you couldnt place in the above categories)
Tony Lockett - only because Carey dominated CHF. Plugger was the class act at FF throughout.

Yeah, I forgot about Archer - you'd have to have him above Wanganeen for mine.

Ablett Snr = 185cm

Not sure about Judd being an "outside" midfielder.

185cm is short enough...

your right on Judd... i'd prob think about matera as pazz mentioned for picking the best pure outside mid.

makes picking an inside mid tough. I think I still lean on Voss. the fact he captained 3 flags in a row as well during the period says a lot.

revised. hirdy has to be there oh and simon black as the outside mid. geez has he got the skills.

Tall Defender:Jackovich,
Tall Forward: Carey,
inside mid: Voss
outside mid: Black
Small Forward: Ablett Snr(is this allowed?),
ruck: Cox
Wildcard: Hird

Yeah Judd is a bit of both. Since he's lost a yard of acceleration with his groin injury he's focussed a lot more on crumbing the packs and getting that handball off. But a couple of years ago he was scintillating with his ability to zig-zag in and out of traffic, break the lines, run 10-20m and hit an opponent right on the chest. I think the thing with Judd is that he could do it all with one possession off the tap whereas most teams need a rover to feed it out to the linkman before they can deliver to the forwards.

Gotta admit tho, I reckon Judd has lost his edge in speed and this means he can no longer take the game on like he used to. I think we've seen the best of him. Rather than being the best player in the comp i think he's dropped down and is no longer above the likes of Ablett, Bartel, Black, Cooney etc

I hear what you are saying Benny but gee, how often would you see Hirdy all on his own as he used to run to position so effectively. I would say its almost impossible to fully catgorise him in any one position as he was so adept at playing all over the ground.

Either way, he definitely makes the list - no matter the position

Absolutely! He was everywhere I guess....inside, outside, forward, back etc. The ultimate "utility" as they used to be called.

agree with pretty much everything except I'd have Ablett Snr ahead of Dunstall
