Wow. Just wow.

Is this the same bloke who has spent the last two years puffing out his chest and getting stuck into guys for poor discipline?

Frustrating year for McVeigh I suppose but this is really odd.

Having a brain fart and thumping someone on the field is not out of character for Spike (unfortunately).

But this is very odd. Out on the booze? Any details available?

The problem with McVeigh (and I said this on these boards after his Rd 22 speech last year), is that he talks leadership but very rarely actually displays it.

Reimers and McVeigh are two peas in a pod. No wonder they don't get along.

Stanton neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeds to have a big game against Collingwood for us to win I think. He hasn't done much in the last month so he's due for a big one.

A SUNDAY-night drinking binge will prevent Mark McVeigh from bolstering Essen don's midfield for the Bombers' blockbuster clash with Collingwood on Friday night.

After receiving a one-week suspension from the AFL for striking Melbourne's Jared Rivers in round 12, McVeigh has been hit with the same penalty by his club as punishment for going out on Sunday night and missing a training session on Monday.

The Age has been told McVeigh was drinking heavily at a South Melbourne hotel until at least 3am. He notified the club later that morning he would not be attending the training session.

Essendon coach Matthew Knights said the Bombers' football department's decision to demote McVeigh to play in the VFL for Bendigo had been made in consultation with the team's leadership group.Mark was unfortunately out socialising on Sunday and missed a training session on Monday, and that being the case his preparation has been hindered for this Friday night's game," Knights said this morning. "Mark will be playing in the VFL and regaining some form and fitness there."

As well as form and fitness, Knights agreed McVeigh may also need to regain some respect from his teammates because the drinking incident occurred while he was serving the suspension for a jab to the jaw of Rivers.

"Yes, possibly, We'll speak to the playing group about it this morning as well. Obviously Mark's pretty disappointed with it all but that's part of it. He made a choice, he chose a path and he . . . missed a training session which is important to Friday night's build-up. Whether he's a first-year player or second-year player or a champion of the football club, if you're not going to get the trademark right you're not going to get that professionalism right to prepare yourself to play. We're not going to pull any punches with anyone."

McVeigh was expected to be a valuable replacement for injured midfielder Jobe Watson, but Knights said the club had no issue with having to turn to another player.

"It is disappointing . . . because Mark's a quality player. This year he's taken a while to get going because of injury but last year he was sensational . . . so it is disappointing not to be able to bring him into the line-up but that's the way it goes."

"I always tell all my players we've got 46 on the list and they can all play, and I'm not fussed who I put out there (instead of McVeigh) because I know they'll do the club proud when they go out there."

McVeigh's senior-team suspension will only be for one week, Knights said.

The suspension over shadowed the announcement that young Bombers defender Tayte Pears is the NAB Rising Star nominee for round 13.

Very disappointing behaviour from Spike....not what we want from a member of the leadership group.

Excellent response from the club though as it sends a clear message to the whole playing group that this sort of behaviour is not acceptable. =D>

Thanks for info, not news I wanted to hear though. What is going on in his head first the suspension against Melbourne now this!!

Is'nt he in the leadership group? Don't like his chances now of being captain in the short term. He has to have an enormous finish to the season to even remain in the leadership group.

Agree totally with the clubs decision to demote him to travel to Bendigo, even though its an important game this week. The club is stronger than the individual & examples have to be made to set the scene for a disciplined future from the young players. Something the scum won't do.

On a positive note this could set the scene for a win this week & strong finish to the year as the players know that shit on or off the field will not be tolerated.

BUT : WHAT WAS MCVEIGH THINKING????

I love Spike but this time he has really let the club down. The report was stupid, but this is beyond comprehension....

Think of it this way:
Swap the names "McVeigh" and "Lovett" and tell me what the punishment would really have been, given being suspended for a brain-dead act followed by grogging on until 3am.

I say double the penalty dished out to McVeigh and strip him of any "leadership responsibilities".

Much respect lost...

He just treads a very thin line and currently is stepping over it. It's dangerous for him and the club. He just needs to pull his head in, cement a spot in the side, gain some respect from the playing group, and go forwards from there.

wow i am in shock at this news... how could he be so stupid. This seems completely out of character as well. I also believe that this indescretion has cost him the captaincy in the future as well.

Lol. South Melbourne on a Sunday night = Starbar.

It's good, but not "manthisissoawesomethati'mgoingtogettrolleyedandmissthemostimportantgameoftheseason" good.
