A combination of the reference to being number 1 in 1998, singers name being the same as yours and that it featured a song in their native tongue.
I'll post a new question later as I have to go and interview someone for a job now.

The final studio album released before the band broke up, this album saw the band climb to the pinnacle of music and the title of "world's biggest band"
The album had a number of singles released including one of the band's most popular hits.
The title of the album is also the opening track.

I was thinking recent - they were egotistical enough, and they did break up.
Any clues?

No...the band recently reformed and will be in Oz early next year.
The lead singer has had a successful solo career whilst the other members have been involved in composing movie sound tracks.
This must give it away

Debut album was the first of a ten record contract.
Released 1973.
The first track was later covered and became a number one hit for someone else.
The title of the album includes one of the states in the US.
