According to SEN he was in a race and hit a tree. His co-driver is alive but in a very serious condition and been taken to the hospital now. But he died instantly when he hit the tree.
Just an absolutely tragic week for Australia :(

The Age is reporting:

Racing car driver Peter Brock has been killed in a car accident in Western Australia, according to reports.

Early reports suggest that the racing car driver was killed when his car ran into a tree.

It's understood the crash occurred while Brock was taking part in the Targa West rally in Western Australia.

Brock, 61, was driving with Mick Hone in a Daytona Coupe.
The circumstances of the accident remain unclear.

The Targa West takes place over four days and is divided into two categories, competition and challenge, the latter catering for relatively standard specification road cars.

The rally began in Perth yesterday.

Race organisers said an announcement would be made soon.

They would confirm only that an accident had taken place.

Brock, from Melbourne, was married with three children.

In a stellar career, he became Australia's best known motor sport personality and a dominant figure in the sport.

Mick Hone was a superbike rider from the 1980-90's and is a Suzuki dealer in MontAlbert[/b]

Holy Crap! What a week. It makes you think...Whose next? I hope the answer to that is NO-ONE! Two legends of this country gone in a flash. They both died while doing what they have done since they could walk, but they both died way to early! I suppose this is why you live every day like its your last :? R.I.P Brocky!

It's a sad week. Let's hope that it doesn't run in threes in this case.

My only silver lining on both tragic occurances is that both of these great men died doing the things they loved. Both have left truly outstanding legacies.

What a true shame. Two in a week, in similar circumstances (sudden, doing something they love and seemingly expert at) It really is unbelievable and a great shame.

I'm a Ford fan, but have got ultimate respect for Brock, The origins of which date back long before i was born.

Back in 81, the last race of the season at Lakeside, Brock and Dick Johnson were battling it out for the championship. Johnson was just ahead on points, but it was so insignificant as to lead to the situation that the winner between those two would walk away with the championship.

It was really close throughout the final few laps, with Brock just trailing Johnson. This was of course back in the days when track marshalls wern't so strict on body contact to the extent that you could take out a competitor with little fuss if you just clipped them in the right spot.

Brock, to his credit, didn't go that option. He raced fairly and with great sportsmanship in that race, even though his inaction ultimatly cost him the championship, with Johnson winning that race by a narrow margin.

I was born in 87, so obviously didnt see the race, but subsequently looking back when i discovered a appreciation of Australian motorsport, especially 1980's era motorsport, that one moment gave me a lot of respect for the man, the King of the Mountain.

I only met him once, at a charity event about 5 years back that he organised at Healesville Racecourse. He was doing some autograph signing among other things and the line would have stretched a good 100 meters. When it got to my turn, being a racing car fan, i was such in awe of this man, that i could barely spit my name out.

Australian sport has lost one of its champions.

Shocking and incredibly sad news.

Didn't know anything about it until a colleague at work mentioned it during Friday afternoon - and then my mobile rang with a mate telling me more.

Hopefully we'll find out about the state funeral - would be worthwhile going.
