The legal system in this country needs a huge shake up. Can’t beieve the low levels it can stoop to. I will just say that it appears they are hellbent on releasing the guilty and dangerous criminals back into society as quickly as possible...and then there is Sue Neill-Fraser - who it appears after a lengthy independent investigation, someone who is innocent that they want to keep locked up for 23 years.

I’ve had it with these “justices” and law makers. They are more criminal than the perpetrators that wander through the system. They are supposed to be educated. But they act like imbeciles when it comes to miscarriages of justice.

Not sure how many of you watched “Undercurrent” - the documentary into the disappearance and likely death of Bob Chappell in Hobart 2009. Sue Neill-Fraser was convicted of his murder on highly circumstantial evidence where there is no body or murder weapon.

The 9 year independent investigation uncovered many problems with the initial investigation where detectives just wanted to build a case around Sue Neill-Fraser, and ignored everything else - including DNA evidence of a 15 year old girl that was found on Bob Chappell’s yacht.

I won’t go into every detail this independent investigation uncovered, only to say that Sue Neill-Fraser is innocent of this crime and she is still in jail. Despite the extensive evidence gathered, signed affidavits, and comprehensive report - the Tasmanian government, attorney general and solicitor general refuse to do anything except to allow “the system to do its thing”. The same system that put her in jail in the first place, and the same system that appeared to try and sabotage the independent investigation.

There ought to be a Royal Commission into this disgrace. And heads need to roll.

Agreed.There’s a case over here,where the convicted killer Arthur Greer seems as Guilty as all hell and public enemy number 1.

But in recent times,a few things emerged from his Crime against Sharon Mason that didn’t add up.No politician on either side of politics would touch it with a Barge Pole.

That’s mainly in deference to Sharon Mason’s family,who refuse to believe any other possibility than Greer is the real killer,despite the chance the Real killer might still be at large.

Greer’s done his time for the state and has been deported.The State Government has washed it’s hands off him and pretty much considered the Sharon Mason Case Closed!

I only saw the headline in The Age today so far,but apparently a Child killer is about to have his sentence cut.

Do you know anything about that?

Watched that docco. What was uncovered and discovered really shows how the system can turn on itself. Is they system really interested in getting decisions right, or is it about protecting the ‘process’ or the reputations of people within it?

The interference by local police to stall / derail / sabotage the independent investigation is all about protecting the reputations of the detectives who conducted the initial investigation which led to the conviction. Despite the new evidence showing that someone else was at the scene and could possibly have done it is of no in interest to them. Well, that’s the problem right there.

She has been granted an appeal to the Supreme Court. If successful, the conviction may be quashed or she may be re-tried.

Yes, I noticed that. Too much light on this case for them not to proceed with an appeal.

This is the system;

Quick to convict, slow to exonerate miscarriage of justice

The woman should not spend another day behind bars. And their should be a Royal Commission into Tasmania Police.
