Australia Day Date

Post by boncer34 »

Another year another round of change the date arguments. So BT's what say you?

I'd prefer to not to change the date simply because in my lifetime this has always been Australia Day and tbh I don't fully understand why we're so hung up on using the actions of the past to claim disrespect now.

Having said that if they changed it to another date I really wouldn't care, though could they make it a permanent Friday or Monday so we get the 3 day weekend?

In summary I'm probably best described as meh. If it stays 26th then cool if not then I'm fine with that too.

I’m all for changing the date, changing the political system, changing the flag, and changing the constitution.

I’m also All for changing the Date, the Flag and all that.

The reality is,we gotta get past the Monachists on this,at The Ballot Box.

It won’t happen for some time yet and the Australian Republican Movement’s timing recently, was lousy!

No one’s really thinking about their proposals right now, with all that’s going on.

The trick is,when do they get it back in the spotlight, when our Focus Isn’t f****** Covid!

I'll be honest I'm ambivalent about becoming a republic as well but the arguments for changing are totally valid.

If we did become one would you just make the Prime Minister role now a Presidential role?

I think I prefer the President to be the role of the GG. Not much changes other than the Governor General becomes our President, and the parliament remains the same - with a Prime Minister of a majority government.

The President is to be elected by the people, with nominations coming from state / territory governments, as well as a short list of up to 3 by the federal parliament. The appointment is to be for 5 years.

The head of state would have no authority in day-to-day governance or passing laws. Just the swearing in of a prime minister with majority support in the House of Reps, or calling for elections if that support does not exist.

I like it Benny, I do wonder it having the head of state being purely ceremonial would lead to candidates who don't take the job seriously.

But it's one of the better ideas I've seen put forward.

I believe it’s the latest model put forward by the republican movement. I quite like it.

I think it’ll be fine re: candidates. The current GG’s take their job seriously. I don’t see why that’ll change with a change in title and process of appointment.

I think we should change the date, but I also respect the views of some Indigenous that I know that think keeping the date allows Indigenous issues to remain at the forefront; and also that of people like Noel Pearson who says something like the day can be used to both celebrate the first peoples, the establishment of a modern democracy, and the multicultural hues to our nation, as well as mourn those tragic deeds done against our Indigenous, and their current plight. Perhaps it's a matter of balanced emphasis?

But I also think a new date will have the same acrimony, division etc for all the same reasons. So who knows.

As for a Republic - no problem. But I sincerely hope we don't head down a US style system. Totally dysfunctional, and causes more problems than solves.

Just change the F***ing date FFS!!!
Not all Indigenous people are unhappy about Jan 26, but A LOT sure are.
So why do we want to continue to hurt them?
I've never met or even read about anyone that had any passionate, logical reason for keeping Jan 26, except "because we always have" - which isn't even true. We've only all had a public holiday on Jan 26 since 1994.
I just don't see why almost any other date is so hard to change to, or why so many people are happy to rub Indigenous peoples noses in our history, when there is no actual need to.

Tony - Noel Pearson must be a dill. We have numerous days on the calendar already that celebrate/acknowledge a wide range of Indigenous issues/history.

As for the Republic. I'm not fussed about it. But if we have one, then I'd be agreeable to the concept Ben put forward.

Love to nudder, but try getting past the Establishment, the Monarchists, the tea and scones brigade. They’ll be dragged kicking and screaming before they acknowledge it should change.

3rd March.

Australia Act 1986 date of signing.

I believe this was when appeals to the Privy Council ended.
