He should have beaten the crap out of someone...he wouldn't get that much time if he'd given someone a beating.

But that's the law for you...money is always more important than people

I applaud the judge for giving him 15 months. I bet you Wheatley shat himself when he heard that sentence being handed down - no way would he have expected to get time.

Yep. Wheatley, being a well-heeled businessman with significant contacts, hires a high-profile barrister with a reputation as one of the best going around at a cost of somewhere around $10k per day.

Outcome? Significantly harsher sentence than most would've predicted.

He's stiff I reckon. Would be people about who would be rorting much more severely than Wheatley.

Very severe also considering he pleaded guilty, cooperated fully, paid the money back immediately, and has promised to dob in more tax cheats.

Very stiff.

Stupid decision.

As you said Stag...he did all you noted and still got stiffed.

So how many more people will come forward who have done what he did, and co-operate with the ATO 100% like he did, knowing now even if they do all that, they're still going for a holiday?

Answer....zero, nada, zip.

And the dumb thing is it is going to cost us ...the taxpayers...what $75-$100k....to "look" after him for 15 months when he could have been sentenced to say use his celebrity to raise money for charity for 3 years for say 2 days a week?

Too many people go inside for silly mistakes who have done nothing wrong before or since, who's punishment should be someting to contribute to benefit of the community. Stupid.

Murderers, rapists, armed robbers etc....jail for sure but guys like Wheatley, whats the point? Totaly illogical.
God you blokes are soft. How many times have you been out enjoying a nice afternoon in a cafe or something and John fking Franham comes over the speakers and ruins your whole day? If it wasnt for Wheatley, he would have dissapeared after Sadie. Wheatley managed him, at the same time he owned the biggest FM network in the country. The fker should be given life for cultural abuse.

Maybe that's why the sentence was so severe.

He got a month for 'The Last Time' tour, and another month for 'The Last Time.. Again" tour, and another month for the "No Really, its the Last Time: We Really Mean It This Time" tour...

Perhaps the sentence should have been forcing Wheatley to make a free series of TV ads campaigning against tax evasion? or would that have been a sentence on the general public, who would have to watch the ads?

Can I ask how the DPP gets away with NOT recommending a suspended sentence as promised for his cooperation ? This is a total disincentive for any other of the players involved to come forward.

The punishment should be to pay the tax he was meant to pay plus big interest and a hefty amount of community service. Its not a crime of violence and a most likely a first offence so why jail ?

In the meanwhile Bert's son gets his sentence quashed for domestic violence.

He Has paid the Tax he evaded AND paid a fine as well.

and I agree wholeheartedly with the Newton Case. The reason for getting it squashed was so he could get work Overseas...... i hope Brooke spills the Beans BIG TIME on the little twerp and wrecks any future employment oppotunities.

Wheatley gets jailed for tax evasion/fraud whatever and these mongrels get a rehab program...the law is an ass :x

Werribee DVD youths plead guilty
Sasha Shtargot
July 20, 2007 - 3:12PM

Seven youths have been spared a custodial sentence after pleading guilty to making a DVD which showed a girl being sexually assaulted and degraded in Werribee last year.

The seven, who appeared at a Children's Court hearing today, will instead be assessed for an adolescent sexual rehabilitation program.

They are to face two charges of procuring sexual penetration by intimidation and one of assault and making and producing child pornography.

The seven youths will reappear in court on August 8 for a further plea hearing.

Four other teenagers who intend to contest the same charges will reappear at a contest mention on September 3.

Look, there is no doubt that there are abnormalities within the legal system in this country. The Weribee youths should be named, shamed and get the book thrown at them, there is no doubt about that. There are many other examples of "slap on the wrist" judgements that border on insanity which really should be looked at.

However, on a case by case basis, I think Wheatley's penality is fair enough. Even though he repaid his debt, at the end of the day he went out and, with full knowledge of his actions, broke the law. Most of us pay our taxes year after year, why should he try and make himself exempt from the whole process.
