Steve Irwin visits South Park

Steve Irwin, South Park style

The creators of the South Park cartoon series are unrepentant about a new episode that shows Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin attending a party in Hell with a stingray barb protruding from his chest.

Irwin died just eight weeks ago when a stingray barb pierced his heart as he was filming off the north Queensland coast.

The South Park episode, which had been scheduled for broadcast in the US on Wednesday, is expected to upset Irwin fans and his family - wife Terri and children Bindi and Bob.

But the show's creators say it's not the first time their work has created waves.

"We have offended people in the past and probably will again," a South Park spokesman a London newspaper.

"We know that regular watchers will not be shocked."

In the episode, Satan hosts a fancy dress party attended by Irwin, Princess Diana, Adolf Hitler and other famous dead people.

But Irwin is kicked out by the Devil because he's not in costume.

Britain's media watchdog has labelled the episode distasteful.

"This is such bad taste and the makers of South Park should review their decision to show it," watchdog John Beyer said.

"Steve's family are still grieving.

"To lampoon somebody's death like that is unacceptable and so soon after the event is grossly insensitive."

Have they gone too far this time or is it just another episode?

Maybe a bit too soon after his death but nobody makes people watch it so who knows?

Tasteless, but what can you do. They offend everyone, at least once, I'd be a hypocrite to start carrying on about it now when I could've give a shit when they ragged on just about everyone else.

It's all satire. If it's likely to offend you shouldn't watch. I can see the humour in it.

It's not as if they're picking out on certain people or races.

Everyone cops it from South Park, as others have said if you dont like it don't watch it.

Some of the stuff they do is pretty low, but that's how the show is. I do think that it has become a lot worse since the first few seasons of it.

No doubt. Im not a huge south park fan, dont care for it much. But people now know about the episode, if they find it distasteful, then dont watch it.

I remember an episode where they bagged scientology (religion with many famous actors) and one of the voices of south park (chef), practices it. So he quit, and they went ahead with the episode and all of his lines in that episode where all taken from previous episodes. It was actually quite well done, ill give them that.

People should really just move on. I know it was sorta recent but there are going to be heaps of jokes going around about his death anyway. So I agree if you dont like it just dont watch it.

And how many of you have seen the episode? The bit only lasts for 40 seconds.

read in the "paper" (ie mx in the train on the way home after work) that one of the most popular hallowean costumes in America this year are the khakis with the stingray barb sticking out the chest.

The whole thing is tasteless, both the South Park thing and the Halloween thing. But, the USA is a different beast, so to speak.

Here's the supposedly offending clip.

Backstory: Satan is having a Sweet 16 Party for himself and it's fancy dress invite only affair.
