Re: Robert the Great
What more does a guy have to do to win a Premiership medallion???
376 Games, 20 seasons, 2 Brownlow medals, 5 Club B&F's, several AA selections
Where did it all go wrong?
.....oh of course, he doesnt play for a football team.
Deserved better

Re: Robert the Great
Great player. Always has been right up there in my list of favourite non-Essendon players. Just a shame for his sake that he got stuck at St Kilda for 20 years, but then again it could've been worse had he been stuck at Richmond or Bulldogs, neither of whom have even made it to a GF in the last 20 years.
Re: Robert the Great
An exceptional player and a great bloke. It's rare in football that you wish better for an opposition player but he deserved a flag in 97.
Congratulations on a fantastic career. =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>
I'm looking forward to a decade from now when we'll be considering Brent Stanton in a similar light...

Re: Robert the Great
If its possible for a dual-Brownlow medalist to be underrated, he is.
Sensational player. In the top 10 midfielders of all time.

Sensational effort in this era of footy... or any era for that!
surely missed but more then just saints fans... although they will be crying over this, much like us over Sir Jimmy!
Good luck to him for the rest of the season!

Apart from echoing all above comments, have to ask....do we have a hope in hell in round 22 now?Jazz_84 wrote:Sensational effort in this era of footy... or any era for that!

I'm more confident now. St Kilda have a history of choking on the big stage.BomberinJapan wrote:Apart from echoing all above comments, have to ask....do we have a hope in hell in round 22 now?Jazz_84 wrote:Sensational effort in this era of footy... or any era for that!

Do you recall what should have been our biggest game ever after finals in round 21 last year?BomberinJapan wrote:Apart from echoing all above comments, have to ask....do we have a hope in hell in round 22 now?Jazz_84 wrote:Sensational effort in this era of footy... or any era for that!

Re: Robert the Great
Kudos to a true champion of the game. An honest, fair player on the field and a top bloke off it. His record says it all.
Re: Robert the Great
Awsum player! Even though he won 2 Brownlows, he still did seem to be underrated slightly. Wish him all the best in retirement. Wouldn't be surprised is we see him somewhere in the coaches box.

Lovely guy
Last year my 12 year old son recognised him with his fam at Melb Museum during Sept school holidays - and said quickly G'Day and how much he admired him even though he is a Don's supporter.
Mr Harvey gave my son a ten minute chat about life in the AFL and some tips on how to improve his game. Son was really impressed - especially as Mr Harvey was with his kids and wife.
What can I say - a true champion both onfield and off!
Cheers - STI

All the best to him in retirement.
Great player and (even more importantly) not a prick (like Carey and some other so-called champions).

Re: Robert the Great
A very likeable bloke and it's regrettable he probably won't win a flag in his career. The Saints owe him a whole lot IMO.
Bombers till' I die
Re: Robert the Great
What an ornament to the game this bloke has been. I just could never understand why it was impossible for our boys to tackle him - then I worked it out he was so strong through the hips he could always shimmy or side step out of being tackled. G Ablett was doing that a bit this year but to think Robert Harvey has been at that level for 20 years is amazing.
Well done on a brilliant career. =D> =D> =D>

Wonderful, wonderful player. Grew up down my way as well and still see him every now and then around Frankston when I go to visit the olds.
One of the very best midfielders of our generation. Very fair and honest bloke as well. =D>

Re: Robert the Great
Forgot to recount my favourite Harvey story:
I don't know if anyone else remembers this, but earlier in the decade Harvey picked up a nasty case of plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis, or heel spurs as it is commonly known due to the searing pain you feel in your heel when you have it, basically refers to a tear in the fascia (think of the white "skin" on the outside of a side of beef) on the band of muscle connecting your heel to your toes.
The plantar fascia doesn't really do anything for you structurally but when you tear it, you know about it. A bad tear can take between 12-18 months to heal naturally and there are very few things you can do treatment wise. There is another option - to complete the tear (i.e. cut the fascia completely) with surgery. This has some long term ramifications but will stop the pain.
Harvey took a third option. Not wanting to go under the knife because of the recovery time and not wanting to wait for it to heal naturally, he got up on a table at home, jumped so that he'd land in a fashion that put pressure on the fascia, and repeated until he'd torn the thing himself. Having had plantar fasciitis myself, I can't imagine how painful that would have been, nor how long it would have taken, but the bugger was playing the next Saturday.
Tough as nails that bloke.
