Gotta beef up.
Re: Gotta beef up.
Sti, i've actually found that exercise in females actually tends to reduce size in the pectoral region!
This is by no means a universal rule because I have observed (for scientific purposes...) many pole dancers and other gentleman's club employees who seem to do a lot of exercise yet the size of their enormous globular chests never seem to decrease.
Fascinating area of study that will require more extensive investigation.

Re: Gotta beef up.
That isn't the muscles reducing in size, it's fat loss...Sismis wrote:Sti, i've actually found that exercise in females actually tends to reduce size in the pectoral region!
Re: Gotta beef up.
Yep. They use the power in their arms to gain horizontal velocity. The power in their shoulder flexes the arm at a quicker rate than those with weaker shoulders providing more angular momentum.Filthy wrote:
Sprinters have bigger upperbodies to drive them forward quicker in the sprint.
Re: Gotta beef up.
So we should be seeing the likes of Alwyn Davey and Andrew Lovett being out sprinted by Jonathon Brown types.....

Re: Gotta beef up.
There are alot of factors that go into a sprint, a strong upper body is only one. Davey & Lovett are alot lighter making it easier for them to move their body at a faster rate and most likely they would have more fast twitch muscle fibers than Brown would.BenDoolan wrote:So we should be seeing the likes of Alwyn Davey and Andrew Lovett being out sprinted by Jonathon Brown types.....

So there is no point posting pictures of Mr Atlas and expecting someone like Winderlich to become him.

Re: Gotta beef up.
Good thread.
Making a concerted effort to bulk up is something that becomes easier with age and time. Have a look at how well developed Nick Riewoldt is now compared to when he was 22.
We would want to be careful not to over-bulk our young players up when they don't have the fitness base to handle running with a heavier frame.

Re: Gotta beef up.
The new 'speedy' Essendon midfield?

You're wasting your time Benny D. Watching Filthy debate is like watching an Emu trying to box.BenDoolan wrote:Eggzachary.robrulz5 wrote:There are alot of factors that go into a sprint, a strong upper body is only one. Like sand through the hour glass, so are the days at the Essendon Football Club.
Re: Gotta beef up.
using the same "argument" then this is the alternative Essendon midfield. As long as they can lift their arms over their head of course...

Re: Gotta beef up.
Hmmm ... methinnks we need a balance ... some need to beef up for the bash and crash style of game (especially the in and under type players ... oh Jobe already has) ... but the critical difference between EFC and the other clubs is the number of speedsters and leapers in the team. IMO speed and leap is lost in bulking up - Geelong get away with the lack of speed and leap because of their very very high skill level and complete game plan .. which we do not have at this stage.
Sooo ... Wouldn't mind seeing Hooker, Pears, Bellchambers and even Houli bulk up a little. Perhaps Lonegran could also hit the protein shakes.
Myers and Gumbelton - while a case may be made to bulk up ... I wouldn't mind seeing them on the park for at least 15 games in 2010 at least before a decision is made.
Neagle - just get fit.
The rest - no....
Especially no for Ryder as he will lose his mobility (which will become important when Hille returns).

Re: Gotta beef up.
Courtney Johns is a good example, he had the perfect body for AFL, pity he was handicapped by his hip injury.
Could have been a star,,,if only things went right for him.
