ESSENDON assistant coach Dean Wallis is the subject of an AFL investigation into alleged betting on a match involving his club last weekend.
The AFL launched the investigation yesterday into a football official's alleged three-figure bet on what is called a quarter-quad bet.
A quarter-quad involves betting on scores at the respective intervals in games, including margin bands.
The AFL declined to comment this morning, while Wallis and Essendon chief executive Ian Robson were unavailable.
Wallis, 42, returned to Windy Hill this year as a development coach after terms at Fremantle and St Kilda.
He is a two-time Essendon premiership player who played 127 games from 1987-2001.
The AFL investigation is expected to take several days.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou told 3AW that AFL integrity officer Brett Clothier would speak to the subject of the allegations "in the next day or so".
"After what's transpired in the past few weeks the actual notion that someone would place a bet on their own team seems incredible," Demetriou said.
"It defies belief."
It comes just a week before Collingwood defender Heath Shaw makes his return from an eight-week suspension for placing a $10 bet on his camptain Nick Maxwell to kick the first goal in a game against Adelaide.
Shaw and Maxwell were also fined for breaking the league's strict anti-gambling rules.
The bet appears to be a quarter quad.
We came from 6 goals down in the last quarter.
The quarter quad would have been Ess-Port-Port-Ess which presumably would have paid a mint.
Oh. Shit.

Seriously, what is he thinking??
All the scrutiny Shaw and Maxwell came under and he goes and does that.
Gets everything he deserves coming for him now if true!
If proven true, he is a f****** peanut. After previous incidents, anyone involved in a footy club should not even walk past a TAB let alone place a bet.

BUT:
If he's put a bet on a quarter quad, he was obviously looking to make some money.
Ess-Ess-Ess-Ess would have been paying sweet f a.
Which means that its likely that he bet on Port to be in front for at least 1 quarter.
If that's true, regardless of whether or not the bet collected, the club is in massive trouble.
I don't see how the club can be in trouble though. If it is true then Wallis should be sacked. If it is true then I'm pretty sure the AFL will dish out a ban that make Heath Shaws look like a reprimand.

Lol. f****** idiot as a player, f****** idiot as a coach.
Obviously had a dip on Port doing better than everyone expected knowing that Fletcher was going to be a late withdrawal, we had nothing to play for, were coming back from Perth etc. The odds of a Port-Port-Port-Port quarter quad would've been huge, they were paying 20-1 just for the win.
Would be amazed if he held onto his job (if the allegation is proven).
Wallis, 42, is understood to have told club officials he placed the bet on behalf of a friend in a hotel TAB.
excuse aint good enough

Couldn't give a f***. Whether it be Dean Wallis, Heath Shaw, Nick Maxwell or otherwise, I couldn't care less. I hope there's more of it. The AFL love to promote betting, so I hope they suffer and have to contend with gamblers. Stick it up your arse.
It's ok for players to have 2 strikes against their name for taking illegal drugs (and have their names protected by the AFL), but stone the person who places a $10 bet or otherwise.
Hope Wally won a truckload.
In saying that, he is one stupid dickhead considering recent events.

It's a joke isn't it? I enjoy a punt, don't get me wrong, but to say the AFL is in bed with Australia's betting agencies is like saying the Great Crusade was a sight-seeing lark. If you play with fire, you get burnt etc...
Like sand through the hour glass, so are the days at the Essendon Football Club.
