Ever heard of Restraint of Trade Caro? The AFL have.

Ever heard of the Trade Practices Act Caro? The AFL have and are shit scared of anyone, especially someone with Essendons Financial clout, testing the AFL Draft rules in the Supreme Court....they know they would lose.

What have Essendon done wrong? What rules have Michael and Essendon broken?.............still waiting for an answer, fugly.

If you are so upset, have a go at the Bears and Bowers for being so slack in not having him sign an agreement not to play anywhere in 2007, common in other commercial enterprise and a probable rule change by Adolf that closes this alleged loophole.

"AFL must block Michael deal

Caroline Wilson

November 26, 2006

THE bombshell of retired Brisbane Lions defender Mal Michael signing a two-year deal with Essendon has overshadowed the national draft and will continue to dominate off-season AFL debate as the saga unfolds.

The end result of this extraordinary drama will have ramifications for all clubs because of the murky timing of Michael's alleged change of heart after the Lions accepted his wish to retire.

Has Bombers coach Kevin Sheedy pulled off another great trick, a coup that could prove the final piece in the jigsaw for the spine of the Essendon team that even saves his job for yet another contract? And will the Brisbane Lions ever take a trick again?

Will a significant AFL decision come down on the side of the Lions after so many have gone against them in recent years?

There are other questions that remain unanswered. For one, has Michael transferred his insistence on a reduced training regime to the Bombers?

If so, has Sheedy, who has one year remaining on his contract after two particularly poor seasons and wants to continue beyond 2007, agreed to it?

The AFL has launched an investigation into the Michael affair. So why did the league investigations boss Ken Wood, who would be expected to carry out that investigation, agree to the pre-season draft arrangement with Essendon in the first place? And you say it shouldn't happen? Should the deal not go ahead, both clubs would have endured a great deal of angst for no result.

Michael refused on Friday to answer whether he had recently demanded $50,000 up front from the Lions as part of his (presumably) now dead two-year agreement to perform ambassadorial roles for Brisbane in Victoria and Papua New Guinea. Or was that $50,000 just a sham as well? The Lions' star full-back had apparently lost his hunger for the game, a hunger that strangely returned when he watched the grand final thriller, but was hidden by Michael when he signed off from Brisbane four days later.

Certainly the footballer's personal reputation, which did not emerge well from his time at Collingwood, has been further damaged by the alleged financial demand of Brisbane. Michael played in three Brisbane premierships but, like Peter Everitt, he has now left two clubs under a cloud. Assertion. Proof?

Brisbane's reputation continues to be eroded after its gallant climb to the top ....courtesy of a $1mil in extra salary cap....and mighty three seasons at the helm of the competition. Why do so many players now seem so keen to leave the club? Only two years ago Leigh Matthews' pleas to keep the retention allowance seemed so hollow. Who would want to leave such a great team anyway? If you count Luke Power's near departure last season, the answer is a disturbingly big and star-studded number.

The combined leadership strength of Matthews and Michael Voss kept Jason Akermanis on a leash for so many fruitful seasons. How then did Akermanis suddenly implode? In fact, what came first for the three-time premier? The loss of that winning culture or simply the end of winning?

As Brisbane prays for Jonathan Brown to remain healthy, the rapid erosion of it star-studded line-up continues to hurt the club elsewhere.

The club will lose about $2.3 million in 2006 and, as the AFL enters a cash-rich but uncertain new broadcasting world, the Lions' TV ratings decline in their hometown this season will not help the promotion of the club. Only the Lions' Saturday night games are certain to appear on prime-time network free-to-air television in their hometown in 2007 when for the past two seasons Channel 10 showed an AFL game in Brisbane every Saturday night.

The AFL Commission devoted several hours of heated debate last week to the issue of the Kangaroos' foray into the Gold Coast — at this stage a 10-game three-year deal — with opinion divided on whether the push into Queensland should come much quicker and faster.

The prospect of more games at the Gabba was also raised, just months after one was taken away courtesy of Melbourne and Canberra.

The AFL will devote $208 million to game development — spread over its traditional and non-traditional states — over the next five years but the jewel in its northern crown continues to lose its shine and there is no evidence the Lions will be a force again for several years.

Preventing Michael from lining up for Essendon next season will not help Queensland football but it would make a giant statement of AFL support for Brisbane. How?

As it should. Everyone loves seeing good players play football but, from any position, Michael's retirement from AFL and almost immediate change of heart looks like a cleverly executed con." And your evidence apart from a conspiracy theory?

Caro, not only are you not a journalist's arsehole but you are so ugly a bloke couldn't drink that much beer.

I also totally disagree with this article.

Why should the AFL put on a show of support for Brisbane when they delisted the player. If they were concerned about him showing an about face they should have got him to sign something preventing him from playing next year.

Why should Brisbane be above the rest?

The AFL had already given us the go ahead, how can the AFL "change their mind"?

The other thing can concerns me is the comment that only Lions games are certain to get prime time coverage in Qld next season from our free to air mates. Hmmm, aren't they supposed to show all 8 games near live under their agreement with the AFL????? I don't trust free to air stations, they've taken off the footy in ACT before "due to ratings" and they'll do it again. Vdal can't tell me that no Pay TV won't harm the game. Hope he hears a heap of complaints when on a Saturday night we are watching the Sound Of Music instead of live footy.

I can't believe the stupid responses to this situation. It really is quite simple. Brisbane made Mal Michael a free agent whether they like it or not. You cannot take someone to court and win over an "understanding" or "belief". All that needed to occur in this scenario was the club (if it were suspicious in this case) was to re-negotiate an exit from the existing contract. That didn't happen. What it will do from now on is either #1 Clubs in the future will hold on to a contract until it expires, and if a player retires early, they cannot play elsewhere until the contract expires and no payment is to be made for the rest of the retired period. #2 When negotiating contracts from now on, clubs will have to put in a "retirement" clause. Simple as f****** that. We don't need dumbass speculation and moral grandstanding articles like the garbage from Caroline Wilson - the shittest journalist on AFL football there ever has been.

Wilson - just another disgruntled Tigers fan. I'm fairly sure she doesn't believe in what she wrote in that article. She's paid to create controversy and shit-stir, and she's done exactly that with this article.

She's wrong...plain and simple.

Even Mike Sheahan acknowledges in his article that the only fool in this scenario is Brisbane.

Hell, I have an employment contract that stops me working in the same industry for 6 months if I leave my job!!

But the Lions forgot to do this and thus the angst. Its fuelled by embarassmennt

Typical essendon bashing from your old essendon hating media. Tony Shaw and Caro like to stick the boots in because their clubs havent had any success in about 20years.

What, they haven't had enough support already. I'd call three premierships plenty of support.

The AFl are f***** if they block this move.

Their invstigations officer gave the club permission to sign him. It wasn't immediate either, so it wasn't just like sure whatever. Obviously he checked with the powers that be and then rang the club back an hour later and told them it was fine.

Seeing they had permission from the AFL, Essendon acted in good faith and made the selection public.

Now here where the AFL is truly f*****!!!

If they try and stop the move, then Essendon will sue the shit out of them and win. Firstly the got permission from the AFL, and Essendon clearly needed another key defender. The day before the National Draft they were told they would be allowed to pick a mature age one up in the PSD.

That definitely altered the clubs actions during the National Draft. Sure Gumby could play back, but he's played the majority of his junior career at CHF.

If Essendon were told they couldn't pick up Michael, then they either would've picked up either Hansen with pick 2 or at the very least they would've picked up a geniune key defender at pick 18 or 20, eg Eric Mackensie.

If the AFL turns around now and says no you can't draft Michaels because Brisbane is sooking too much, they f***** up our recruting and planning for the year, that could have a severe affect on us for several years.

In the situation, Essendon unlike Brisbane would have grounds for legal action and would win, and the AFL would be f*****.

Brisbane f***** up and surely just because they are now whinging about the AFL would not be stupid enough to try and prevent the move.

Really haven't thought about both sides have you Caro!!!

Also you've got to laugh at her comment about "alot of AFL decisions going against the Lions in recent years"

1. What should they have continued to get salary cap concessions until they had won 10 in a row.

2. So the AFL should have extended their Brisbane priority pick zone, so they could've grabbed Riewoldt for free as well. Hell maybe every year we should just allow Brisbane to pick one player from every other team to come and play for them.

Those are the only two major decisions to go against Brisbane EVER you stupid moron!!!

He is out of contract, he can do what he likes and nobody can stop him.

The only thing that will come out of this is that players will have a restriction of trade clause in their contract should the club and player agree to pre-terminate the contract.

AFL must block Michael deal
Caroline Wilson

THE bombshell of retired Brisbane Lions defender Mal Michael signing a two-year deal with Essendon has overshadowed the national draft and will continue to dominate off-season AFL debate as the saga unfolds.

The end result of this extraordinary drama will have ramifications for all clubs because of the murky timing of Michael's alleged change of heart after the Lions accepted his wish to retire.

The main "ramification it will have is clubs will now be more careful and do their jobs properly. You get lazy with your paperwork and it might bite you right in your arse

Has Bombers coach Kevin Sheedy pulled off another great trick, a coup that could prove the final piece in the jigsaw for the spine of the Essendon team that even saves his job for yet another contract? And will the Brisbane Lions ever take a trick again?

Recruiting an available player isnt a trick. It is the job of our team to explore every possible option. No trickery here. We asked him and he said yes. Pretty boring stuff generally.

Will a significant AFL decision come down on the side of the Lions after so many have gone against them in recent years?

are you serious? I would hardly say the Lions have had a bad run from the AFL.

There are other questions that remain unanswered. For one, has Michael transferred his insistence on a reduced training regime to the Bombers?

If so, has Sheedy, who has one year remaining on his contract after two particularly poor seasons and wants to continue beyond 2007, agreed to it?

Sheedy has agreed to it. He has done so because Mal at the age of 29 has proved himself a professional who knows what is required to get the job done. This isnt a recent thing. Just before last season he stopped James Hird from training for a big chunk of the preseason. Still why let facts ruin a good story.

The AFL has launched an investigation into the Michael affair. So why did the league investigations boss Ken Wood, who would be expected to carry out that investigation, agree to the pre-season draft arrangement with Essendon in the first place? Should the deal not go ahead, both clubs would have endured a great deal of angst for no result.

The deal will go through. Your job as a journolist is to give us a real reason this deal shouldnt go through. Earn your money. Ken Wood agreed to it previously because IT IS ALL ABOVE BOARD. Still no mention here of the Lions F****** up their deed of release.

This 50k is the real story here Caro. Let me point you in its direction. Mal took a 50k paycut to help fit one of the Scotts under the salary cap. The Lions and Mal then entered an arrangement where he got that money back afterwards. If this was Carlton or Essendon the while F****** AFL would be burning down with the rush to sanction us.

Certainly the footballer's personal reputation, which did not emerge well from his time at Collingwood, has been further damaged by the alleged financial demand of Brisbane. Michael played in three Brisbane premierships but, like Peter Everitt, he has now left two clubs under a cloud.

There is a point here somewhere isnt their Caro. Cant find a valid argument so time to insinuate something about the man himself. Eyes off the ball perhaps?

Brisbane's reputation continues to be eroded after its gallant climb to the top and mighty three seasons at the helm of the competition.

The retention allowance isnt their problem. They arent leaving over money. Mal was on a rumoured 400k contract next year and chose to leave them. He is playing for less here. Perhaps there is another story here rather than one paragraph.

The combined leadership strength of Matthews and Michael Voss kept Jason Akermanis on a leash for so many fruitful seasons. How then did Akermanis suddenly implode? In fact, what came first for the three-time premier? The loss of that winning culture or simply the end of winning?

Aker was never kept on a leash. His behaviour just seemed more erratic once the results werent there to back up his big mouth. In fact he is still talking the same shit from his new club. Also the publicly insinuations that Aker had leaked the team plan probably didnt help being he wasnt in the smallest way involved.

Nor should they be. Being an interstate team doesnt give you the right to have a permanent spot amongst the contendors.

Preventing Michael from lining up for Essendon next season will not help Queensland football but it would make a giant statement of AFL support for Brisbane.

What would that statement be?We are willing to break our rules for the Lions?
We look forward to a nice long court case we cant win against Essendon?
It doesnt matter is the Lions dont do their jobs properly, we will look after them?
We are still ignoring salary cap violations from our Northerly friends?

As it should. Everyone loves seeing good players play football but, from any position, Michael's retirement from AFL and almost immediate change of heart looks like a cleverly executed con.

If you only had a clue you only had evidence. It doesnt matter how it looks unless you can bring some sort of evidence to the table then it comes down to the one fact you ignored in your article. The Lions didnt do their jobs properly and didnt look after their own interests nor their fans. They cant expect the AFL to bail them out becuase they didnt cross their T's and dot their I's.

Football isnt the most important thing in Mals life. His charity work is. The fact is the Lions made him choose and he couldnt give up his PNG work. The Bombers understand his situation and are willing to let him have his PNG work as well as have him play football. "Work Life Balance" is a buzz word everywhere else in the working world. Maybe you should talk to Leigh about it and he would still have his FB

There can be no doubt whatsoever that she is a useless individual. She should be on her knees every day giving thanks that her old man was president of Richmond and this allowed her to draw a massive salary for talking absolute crap.

As for Michael Bowers, maybe he could go out for a drink with Martin Pike to drown his sorrows.
